During his end-of-year press conference, Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman made it clear that the organization needs to be audited – the results simply weren’t good enough.
“I think whether it’s required or not, everything has to be assessed,” Yzerman said. “You know, how we do things, for sure. It would be ignorant to not have an in-depth look at our team and our organization.”
And that’s exactly what I’m going to do. Having already analyzed team achievements and individual player performances, the next step is to audit the franchise and its position within the Atlantic Division.
This “article” will be a little different from my usual analysis. It’s structured like a presentation to high-level decision-makers – a board room consisting of Steve Yzerman, Chris Ilitch, Jim Devellano, and you, the reader. Each section is an opportunity, threat, or important consideration, and has supporting points and key takeaways that the key decision-makers need to be aware of.
Atlantic Division Competition
Red Wings to Face High External Pressure Again In Competition for Limited Playoff Spots

- Buffalo, Montreal, Ottawa, and Florida project to improve in 2026-27
- Tampa Bay and Boston likely flat year-over-year
- Toronto only unknown at this point
Key Takeaway: Detroit cannot plan their roster management decisions in a vacuum; strong division rivals need to factor into offseason strategy with the goal of passing them in the standings.
Competitive Advantages
Red Wings Need to Exploit Franchise Competitive Advantages to Attract & Sign Players
- Ownership willing to spend on players and provide top-notch facilities and amenities
- Family-friendly environment of metro-Detroit area
- Historic, Original Six franchise without overbearing local media presence
- State income tax exists, but is very modest compared to other state income taxes
- Team on the rise and built around young core
Key Takeaway: Detroit has several competitive advantages, but absolutely needs to sell players on joining the franchise; cannot lean on team success/brand affinity anymore.
Red Wings Team Identity
Organization Needs to Define & Establish Team Identity After Having None In 2025-26
- No team identity plus generic player roles in 2025-26
- Clearly define “hard to play against” to ensure identity is understood at all levels
- Roster needs to be tweaked to align with established team identity
- Top-to-bottom buy-in within the organization
Key Takeaway: Yzerman and Todd McLellan need to determine and clearly articulate team identity and use it to guide offseason roster management decisions.
Red Wings Salary Cap Snapshot
Detroit Has ~$15 Million In Cap Space Heading Into Offseason After Factoring In Likely Re-Signings
- Patrick Kane only major UFA likely to be re-signed
- Simon Edvinsson only major RFA
- RFAs Amadeus Lombardi, Carter Mazur, William Wallinder, and Sebastian Cossa have minimal leverage
- Potential roster subtractions not factored into available cap space
Key Takeaway: Red Wings have sufficient salary cap space for major trade acquisitions; team can afford to overpay free agents on short-term contracts to win bidding wars.
Offseason Trade Market
Several Teams Undergoing Changes; Could Benefit Red Wings In Search for Trade Partners
- Toronto, Vancouver, New Jersey, Nashville, and St. Louis have new general managers
- Calgary, Los Angeles, Edmonton, Winnipeg, and New York Rangers expected to tinker with roster
- Jason Botterill fully in charge in Seattle with Ron Francis out
Key Takeaway: Detroit needs to be active in the trade market this offseason given the high supply of potential trade partners and weak free agent class.
Front Office Optimization
Red Wings Need to Bolster & Realign Management Team to Produce Stronger Results

- Promote Kris Draper to Assistant GM & Director of Scouting; fold pro scouting department under his purview
- Hire Chief Pro Scout to oversee department and improve player analysis processes
- Modernize analytics department by hiring software engineer, developer, and analyst to develop proprietary models/dashboards that influence decision-making at all levels
Key Takeaway: Pro scouting and analytics departments are critical players in decision-making, but are also weak spots within the organization; both need reinforcement.
Sports Science
Red Wings Need to More Deeply Integrate Sports Science Into Day-to-Day Operations
- Optimize post-game recovery and rest, especially during road trips
- Personalized and data-informed nutrition for player recovery and weight management
- Implementing psychology tactics to prepare players for late-season pressure, adversity, and playoffs
Key Takeaway: Sports Science is a strong point within the organization, but could still benefit from improvements.
AI
Red Wings Need to Leverage AI to Improve Decision-Making & Automate Time-Consuming Processes
- Automate salary cap management and analyze the NHL CBA for insights on how to maximize the current system
- Reduce cycle time on analytics projects/research to reach conclusions/insights more efficiently
- Mine data lake of player performance and tracking data to uncover insights and provide game strategy recommendations
Key Takeaway: AI can help unlock unseen insights and drive progress; Red Wings should become power users of AI relative to the rest of NHL to enable further growth and create a new competitive advantage.
Bottom Line
While the Red Wings have made progress assembling young talent, structural gaps in identity, roster construction, and organizational execution remain. Action must be taken immediately before the franchise is left behind in the highly competitive Atlantic Division.
Detroit’s management team must establish a clear and consistent team identity, modernize decision-making processes, invest more heavily in player performance and development infrastructure, and optimize organizational structure to improve adaptability. The cost of these improvements and hirings will be offset by the revenue generated from a playoff berth.
The rebuild is over. It’s time for refinement.
