Devils Should Hire Sunny Mehta as Their Next General Manager

The New Jersey Devils are approaching a turning point in franchise history. After being officially eliminated from playoff contention and the recent firing of general manager (GM) Tom Fitzgerald, the organization’s next major decision will come in the front office. Following an extremely disappointing season, the Devils will certainly prioritize filling the GM position during the offseason. If ownership truly wants to push the franchise into sustained contention, one candidate stands out above the rest: Sunny Mehta.

It was reported earlier today that the Devils received permission to speak with Mehta, the current assistant GM and head of analytics for the Florida Panthers. His deep background in analytics, proven track record within a championship organization, and personal ties to New Jersey make him an ideal candidate to lead the Devils’ hockey operations. In many ways, bringing Mehta back to New Jersey would feel like completing a story that began more than a decade ago.

A New Jersey Native Who Understands the Market

One of the most compelling reasons the Devils should hire Mehta is his strong connection to New Jersey. Although born in Michigan, Mehta grew up in North Jersey and played varsity hockey at Ramapo High School in Franklin Lakes.

His childhood passion for hockey was shaped by watching the Devils practice at local rinks in northern New Jersey. Those early experiences helped turn him into a lifelong fan of the team and eventually set him on a path toward a career in hockey analytics.

In a league where front-office executives rarely have personal connections to the communities they serve, Mehta represents something different. He understands the culture of New Jersey hockey, the expectations of Devils fans, and the identity that has historically defined the franchise.

For a team trying to reconnect with its fan base and return to the winning tradition of past decades, having a local voice in charge could be a powerful statement.

Pioneer of NHL Analytics

Mehta’s connection to the Devils goes far beyond childhood fandom. When ownership group David Blitzer and Josh Harris purchased the franchise in 2013, one of their early priorities was modernizing the organization’s hockey operations.

That vision led them to hire Mehta as the director of hockey analytics, creating the NHL’s first full-time analytics department. From 2014 to 2018, he worked inside the Devils’ front office, helping integrate advanced statistics and data-driven decision making into player evaluation, scouting and roster construction.

At the time, the NHL was still catching up to analytics-driven approaches already used in other sports. The Devils were among the early adopters, and Mehta played a central role in pushing that evolution forward.

Fast forward to today, and analytics have become a core component of modern hockey operations. Teams across the league rely on data models to analyze player performance, identify undervalued talent, and improve strategic decisions. Few people have been more influential in bringing that approach to hockey than Mehta.

If the Devils want a GM who understands the modern game and embraces innovation, hiring the person who helped pioneer NHL analytics would be more than a logical step.

Championship Experience

Beyond his early work with the Devils, Mehta has built an impressive resume since leaving the organization. In 2020, he joined the Panthers organization as a key member of the team’s hockey operations department.

Mehta contributed to the Panthers’ strategic and analytical approach as the franchise transformed into one of the NHL’s elite teams. In 2023, he was promoted to assistant GM and head of analytics.

During his time with the Panthers, the team captured two Stanley Cup championships — including the franchise’s first in history — and he played a major role in helping build one of the NHL’s most recognizable and successful teams.

Winning matters. For a Devils team that has reached the playoffs only four times in the past 16 seasons (dating back to 2009-10), bringing in someone like Mehta would add valuable championship experience and a proven winning perspective to the organization that the Devils desperately need.

Mehta has been part of a front office that successfully built a Cup-winning roster through a mix of analytics, scouting, and smart roster management. That kind of experience would be invaluable for a Devils team trying to regroup after an abysmal season.

The Right Fit for the Devils’ Core

The Devils’ current roster is built around young, dynamic talent such as Jack Hughes, Nico Hischier, Jesper Bratt, Timo Meier and Luke Hughes. This core represents a new generation of fast, skilled, analytically valued players who thrive in today’s NHL.

Hiring a GM who understands the analytical side of roster construction could play a major role in maximizing the talent already on the roster. For the Devils, that could mean evaluating which pieces truly fit together and making calculated moves to reshape the lineup where necessary. Whether that involves adjusting the third or fourth lines or identifying players who better complement the team’s core, Mehta has the background to guide those decisions.

Mehta’s philosophy also aligns with the way the modern NHL operates. Successful teams increasingly rely on analytics to uncover undervalued players, identify market inefficiencies, and make smarter long-term contract decisions. The Devils are clearly in need of a fresh approach, and bringing in someone with Mehta’s expertise could help the organization build a more balanced and sustainable roster. By combining analytical insight with strong hockey judgment, he could help the Devils not only improve in the short term but also create a clearer, more strategic path toward consistent contention.

Full-Circle Moment?

Sometimes the best move isn’t bringing in a completely new voice — it’s bringing back someone who already understands the organization.

Mehta knows the Devils. He has worked within the franchise before, understands how the organization operates, and has already built relationships throughout the hockey world.

But he would return with far more experience than he had during his first stint in New Jersey.

He has now worked with multiple NHL organizations, consulted across professional sports, and helped build a championship team. That broader perspective would allow him to lead the Devils with both familiarity and fresh insight.

For ownership, it would also validate the vision they originally had when they hired him over a decade ago.

If the Devils want to usher in the next great era of the franchise, bringing Mehta home could be the perfect place to start.
