Minnesota Frost Defeat the Toronto Sceptres 2-1 in OT

The Toronto Sceptres hosted the Minnesota Frost on Sunday, March 9, for their fifth matchup of the 2024-25 Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) season. The Frost were able to earn their third win against the Sceptres in overtime with a 2-1 final score.

Game Recap

Five minutes into the first, the Frost broke the ice first. Claire Thompson skated the puck up towards the faceoff circle. She passed to Brooke McQuigge, who was skating up the center of the ice. She rocketed the puck past Kristin Campbell to put the Frost on the board.

With 44 seconds left in the first period, Julia Gosling had to take a seat for tripping. The end of the period ran out, and the Frost would have the extra-woman advantage to start the second.

The Frost couldn’t capitalize on their advantage, and the game returned to 5-on-5 hockey. The second period continued with penalties galore. The Sceptres took another penalty, and the Frost earned two. Neither team was able to capitalize on their power play chances. With just a minute left to go in the second, the Sceptres were able to tie the game. Renata Fast skated the puck into the Sceptres’ offensive zone. She passed it around the boards, where it was picked up by Julia Gosling. She passed to Daryl Watts, who skated the puck around the net. She passed back to Fast, who took the shot to tie the game.

The third period was once again full of penalties. The Sceptres took three, and the Frost took one. Despite some scoring chances, neither team was able to score. The period ended tied at one, and the game went into overtime to decide the winner.

Two and a half minutes into OT, the Frost were able to call the game in their favor. Lee Stecklin passed to Kendall Coyne Schofield, who took a shot from the faceoff circle. Campbell was able to make the save, but Britta Curl skated up to grab the rebound. Schofield received the quick pass and took the shot. With a high shot, the puck bounced into the net off Schofield’s second shot. The Frost took this one, 2-1.

The Frost will stay in Canada and take on the Ottawa Charge on Tuesday, March 11. The Sceptres will get a long break as they get ready to host the New York Sirens on Wednesday, March 19.
