3 Takeaways From the Sirens’ 4-3 Shootout Loss to the Fleet

On Wednesday, Jan. 28, the Boston Fleet hosted the New York Sirens for their second matchup of the 2025-26 Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) season. The Fleet scored first with a power-play goal in the first half of the first period, but the Sirens struck back with two goals in the second, earning their first lead.

The Fleet scored twice in the first five minutes of the third period, taking their earlier lead back. However, a late goal from the Sirens tied the game up, and the score was stuck at 3-3 after the end of 60 minutes of play. The two teams headed to three-on-three overtime, but no goals were scored here either, so to the shootout this game went. It took eight rounds, but the Fleet were victorious, 4-3.

O’Neill Finds Power Play Success

Just about halfway into the second period, Hannah Brandt took a seat for tripping. A minute into the power play, Sarah Fillier took a shot, but Aerin Frankel made the save. Kristin O’Neill was in front of the net, and she collected the rebound. She elevated the puck, and her shot put the Sirens on the board.

During the 2025 PWHL Draft, the Sirens traded Abby Roque to the Montreal Victoire in exchange for the 28th overall pick and O’Neill. This is her first season with New York, and so far, she is finding success. This goal marks O’Neill’s fourth this season, tying her personal best in the 2024 season with Montreal.

She has now tied her point total from last season with five. Her personal best sits at nine from the 2024 season, but with the way she has been performing, it is likely O’Neill will break that this season. We are only halfway through the season, and O’Neill is on pace to record 10 points; let’s hope she achieves this goal.

Kaltounkova Continues to Shine

Kristyna Kaltounkova scored the two other goals by the Sirens in this game and continues to prove why she was the first-overall pick in the 2025 PWHL Draft. With her two goals, Kaltounkova now has 11 for the season and 12 points in 16 games.

She not only leads the Sirens in goals, but Kaltounkova now leads the league, surpassing the Minnesota Frost’s Kendall Coyne Schofield, who has 10.

It also marked Kaltounkova’s third multi-goal game. The first half of the PWHL season might be over, but let’s hope she can score her first hat trick in the second half.

Sirens Picked Up a Much-Needed Point

Although the Sirens were handed their second-straight loss as they head into the Olympic break, New York should still be proud of their efforts. They didn’t quit and scored a late-game goal to make sure it went into overtime. They also took five shots on net in overtime, compared to Boston’s one to try to bring home the win.

On the plus side, the Sirens earned a much-needed point. All eight teams were in action on Jan. 28, and with the Frost and the Montreal Victoire both winning their games, they leapfrog into second and third place, respectively. The one point the Sirens earned is keeping them afloat in fourth place, which puts them in a playoff spot.

The league is about to head into an international break for the Olympics, and at the halfway point of the season, it is anyone’s game as the eight teams compete for a playoff spot. Still, this is a huge confidence boost as the PWHL prepares to pause for almost a full month.

PWHL Heads Into the Olympic Break

The PWHL is now on the Olympic break, as 61 players are set to represent their home countries over the next couple of weeks. The Sirens will be back in action on Feb. 26 when they host the Victoire at the Prudential Center.
