On Monday, the Washington Capitals handed out their second contract extension to a goaltender in six weeks with a three-year, $9 million deal signed by Charlie Lindgren. The 31-year-old netminder has spent the last three seasons in Washington after backup roles with the St. Louis Blues and Montreal Canadiens.

Lindgren has a career 66-49-15 record with a 2.77 goals-against average (GAA) and a save percentage (SV%) of .908. Over three seasons in America’s capital, the veteran is 51-37-13 with a 2.78 GAA and a .905 SV%. As the Capitals’ starter last season, the Minnesota-born goalie tied for the league lead with six shutouts en route to a 25-16-7 record. Lindgren started all four games in the postseason with an 0-4 record, 3.58 GAA, and a .864 SV% as the New York Rangers swept the Capitals in the opening round.

When his new extension kicks in next season, Lindgren’s salary will jump significantly from $1.1 million to $3 million. The deal provides Washington with a formidable goaltending tandem with Logan Thompson. The 28-year-old goalie is in the Vezina Trophy conversation this season and received a massive $5 million raise for next season in January. According to PuckPedia, the Capitals will have a cap hit of $8.85 million for their two NHL goalies entering the 2025-26 season.
Lindgren’s contract extension does not impact Washington’s projected $3.65 million cap space heading into the trade deadline on March 7. The Capitals are expected to seek a depth forward to add to the best club in the Eastern Conference.
