5 New York Rangers Games to Watch for on the 2026-27 Schedule

With the offseason in full swing, the NHL released the regular-season schedule for 2026-27 on July 16. Every fanbase across the league always has a few games and dates that they like to look forward to each season, and this season is no different. For New York Rangers fans, there are a handful of games to keep marked on the calendar as the season approaches.

Oct. 1 vs. Tampa Bay Lightning

Home openers are always at the top of the list when it comes to games to watch for each NHL team. It is the first time that fans get to see what the newcomers on their teams look like as well as how things look schematically. This season, the Rangers get to square off with one of the Eastern Conference’s most consistent teams, welcoming the Tampa Bay Lightning to Madison Square Garden for the opening game on home ice.

The Lightning have seen their fair share of roster movement, led by the loss of defensemen Darren Raddysh, forward Nick Paul, and new Ranger Oliver Bjorkstrand. They have brought in veteran defenseman John Carlson (free-agent signing), among others, to fill the gaps left. Seeing how the Rangers stack up against a strong team like the Lightning at the very beginning of the season will be a fun game to keep tabs on.

Oct. 22 @ Toronto Maple Leafs

In their first trip to Toronto at the end of October, the Rangers will most likely get their first look at 2026 number one pick, Gavin McKenna. That alone makes it a game to watch, but seeing how the Maple Leafs look with some new players in tow, including goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, will be a tough matchup for the Rangers. On top of that comes the fact that an Original Six matchup is always attention-grabbing for fans across the entire league. This game is another in a long line of tests to see where the Rangers stand against possibly one of the league’s stronger teams.

Jan. 29 @ Pittsburgh Penguins

In his second season with the Rangers after spending 10 seasons behind the bench for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Mike Sullivan has obviously made his return to Pittsburgh prior to this season, but it will still be an emotional game for the head coach of the Rangers. On top of that comes the fact that the team could be playing against a team they will ultimately be fighting with for a playoff spot come the end of the regular season.

Feb. 18 @ New York Islanders

On top of being against their in-state rivals, the Feb.18 matchup against the New York Islanders kicks off the start of a four-game road trip all against teams who, in February, could be right in the thick of the playoff race (Islanders, Philadelphia Flyers, Carolina Hurricanes and the Washington Capitals). While none of these games are too far travel-wise for the Rangers, the trip could be a big one for the team.

Kicking things off against the Islanders before playing a back-to-back in Philadelphia (Feb.20) and the Hurricanes (Feb.21), the game will easily be the tone setter for the rest of the four-game trip. If the Rangers want to push for a playoff spot and keep things rolling toward the middle of the regular season, they need to take as many points as they can on the road and make the most of prolonged road trips. The stretch in February is one of two four-game road trips, with the first being in November (Nov. 7-13 west-coast Canadian trip).

March 6 @ Buffalo Sabres/ March 7 vs. Vegas Golden Knights

The date for the trade deadline for the 2026-27 regular season has yet to be announced, but last season it was at the beginning of March (March 6), and it is expected to be around the same time for this season. While both matchups on the 6th (Buffalo Sabres) and 7th (Vegas Golden Knights) are bound to be highly spirited contests, the biggest reason I feel either one of these games is worth keeping tabs on is to see what the Rangers’ roster looks like come the deadline.

If the Rangers find themselves in the thick of a playoff push, there could very easily be even more newcomers on the roster after the deadline passes. On the flip side, the roster could look a bit different if general manager (GM) Chris Drury decides to sell pieces at the deadline for future assets. Either way, both of these dates will be ones to keep an eye on for the trade deadline aspect, as well as playing teams who should be right in the thick of the playoff race and will make for entertaining games.

After a busy and strong offseason by Drury and the Rangers, including a handful of additions to the NHL roster, the 2026-27 regular season has plenty of games to keep close tabs on and that are definitely worth watching. The aforementioned games are just a few for fans to certainly watch.
