In today’s NHL rumors rundown, the Edmonton Oilers are trying to ride out early playoff turbulence against the Anaheim Ducks. What happens if they can’t? Meanwhile, the Detroit Red Wings are heading into a potentially explosive offseason after a blunt assessment from the GM. Finally, the Toronto Maple Leafs remain deep in the weeds of their general manager search with two possible finalists.
Oilers Chaotic Summer: If McDavid Doesn’t Heat Up
The Edmonton Oilers return to Anaheim tied 1–1 in their first-round series, but the mood is far from comfortable. Few expected the Ducks to push this hard (or for the Oilers to struggle this much), yet the series has already exposed several concerns. Connor McDavid has been unusually quiet offensively and is now dealing with a possible ankle issue, while Connor Ingram has allowed eight goals through two games.
Edmonton’s power play has also gone cold, going 0-for-6. Injuries to Jason Dickinson and Adam Henrique have created depth issues and while the Oilers still have time to take over the series, the early struggles have raised eyebrows.
What if McDavid doesn’t find his game? What if the Oilers are eliminated by the underdog Ducks?

Jeff Marek said:
“You want to talk about an inferno of an offseason? Have the Ducks beat the Oilers in the first round. If you want to talk about chaotic offseasons with a furious owner — the expectation is Conference Final. Conference Final for this team or there are going to be real questions and probably bodies leaving…”
Red Wings Brace for Busy Offseason Shake-Up
In Detroit, the tone is shifting quickly, especially after GM Steve Yzerman’s press conference on Thursday. Following a season-ending collapse, Yzerman and head coach Todd McLellan made it clear the roster fell short of expectations. Yzerman wasn’t shy about saying the team simply isn’t good enough.
Elliotte Friedman noted that frustration has been building for some time. A year ago, there were questions about whether Yzerman had done enough to support the roster. This season, he made additions—but the results still didn’t follow. Now, the focus has shifted to making changes.
Friedman believes a major offseason move is increasingly likely, whether through trade or broader roster restructuring.
Maple Leafs Still Undecided as GM Search Narrows
Friedman also reports that the Toronto Maple Leafs still lack a clear timeline for naming their next general manager, but the search process continues. Finalists John Chayka, Ryan Martin, and Scott White were all brought in for in-person interviews, but only Chayka and White remain under consideration after Martin was informed he will not advance.
While some reports suggest Chayka may be the frontrunner, the organization is still conducting due diligence and has not reached a final stage involving ownership input. There is also ongoing discussion about the front-office structure, including potential roles for figures like Mats Sundin, while Mike Gillis’ candidacy appears to have cooled.
Hall Won’t Face Supplemental Discipline For Sanderson Head Hit
The Taylor Hall hit involving Ottawa Senators defenseman Jake Sanderson is going unpunished. While head coach Travis Green called the play a “blatant” hit to the head, no supplemental discipline has been issued.
Green hinted that it was obvious why Sanderson left the game and didn’t return. However, there is a belief that blocking a shot with his hand was as much the reason for his exit as the Hall hit. “It’s pretty obvious why he left the game,” Green said following the 2-1 loss. “I just don’t understand how there’s not a five-minute major called on a hit to the head. It’s a blatant hit to the head. It’s the kind of hits you don’t want to see.”
“It’s ridiculous there wasn’t a review.”
