Suggested Trade Sees Flames Land Struggling Blackhawks Defender in Draft Day Deal

The Calgary Flames and Chicago Blackhawks both missed the playoffs last season, but it seems as though the Flames are going to be remaining in a rebuild for a few more seasons, while the Blackhawks are trying to get back into contention as soon as next season, but realistically, within the next two seasons.

Over the next few weeks, speculation will pick up as teams try to improve, and these two teams will likely be involved in plenty of potential trade talks.

The Flames need to find a way to improve their defensive depth, but their main focus needs to be on bringing in younger players with potential, and one name that could make sense for them as they remain near the bottom of the standings, is Kevin Korchinski.

Korchinski needs a fresh start as he needs more playing time, and the Flames seem like the perfect team to give him the extra ice time and larger role that he needs to unlock his potential.

In this article, we take a quick look at a hypothetical deal between the Flames and Blackhawks involving Korchinski, and looking at what a potential return could be. Keep in mind, this is purely a hypothetical idea, and there have been no reports connecting Korchinski to the Flames in any way.

Korchinski, who is 21 years old, played 13 games with the Blackhawks last season, notching two points. In the American Hockey League (AHL), he played 53 games, scoring two goals and adding 24 assists for 24 points. Through 105 NHL games, he has scored six goals and added 13 assists for 19 points, which comes out to a 0.18 points-per-game average.

Flames Land Korchinski, Blackhawks Have Options

The reality is, the Blackhawks may see Korchinski as someone who won’t be a full-time member in their lineup, but they won’t be giving him up for free. Korchinski was a first-round pick, specifically the seventh-overall selection in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, and he still has plenty of potential and the chance of becoming a top-four defender.

Realistically, a deal between the two teams looks like the Flames acquiring Korchinski in exchange for Jacob Battaglia and Henry Mews. Some fans may prefer the Blackhawks add draft capital, rather than bringing in a prospect, but the reality is, they likely use some of their draft capital to try and improve their roster. They have three first-round picks in 2027, three second-round picks in 2026, and two second-round picks in both 2027 and 2028, so adding more draft picks doesn’t really make sense for them.

Mews and Battaglia are solid prospects and bolster the Blackhawks’ overall prospect pool, but neither one is quite ready to make the jump to the NHL. Bringing in two players that the Blackhawks can be patient to wait on makes a lot of sense for them, while the Flames add some immediate help for their blue line, which they desperately need.

Another idea, is the Blackhawks package Korchinski with draft picks in exchange for someone like Blake Coleman or Morgan Frost, but that would mean the Blackhawks are trying to push into the playoff picture by next season, and while they may have the depth everywhere else to try and consider that as an option, it doesn’t seem as likely, unless they make several other moves.

At the end of the day, the Flames make a lot of sense for Korchinski. He gets a larger role, the Flames improve defensively and have another young defender to build around on their blue line, and the Blackhawks either add two solid prospects or a solid contributor.

Time will tell if the Blackhawks end up moving Korchinski at all, but if they do, the Flames would be a team I keep my eyes on as a potential fit.
