Bruins’ Trade Package to Land Oilers’ Darnell Nurse

As we march closer to free agency, the Boston Bruins weren’t very active during the NHL Draft. We saw them trade prospect Fabian Lysell, who has a chance at a fresh start with the Colorado Avalanche.

There are still holes in the lineup that weren’t addressed, namely, the blue line. One option has emerged as a trade chip for the former Stanley Cup contenders, Edmonton Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse. The only issue is his hefty $9.25 million average annual value (AAV) cap hit, and the Bruins’ lack of cap space ($7.715 million per PuckPedia).

The Bruins have been linked to the Oilers defenseman, who could add size and snarl that’s been missing on the blue line. According to The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta, the Original Six team has been on Nurse’s list of landing spots.

“There are a couple of options available right now with respect to Edmonton and moving Darnell Nurse,” Pagnotta revealed on the June 27 episode of the Hello Hockey podcast. “I reported yesterday that Boston is another team on his list that he would be willing to go to. But nothing, I believe, has transpired on that front. It sounds like it’s Philadelphia and Anaheim that are battling this one out to try and get Darnell Nurse.”

The Bruins Benders Podcast’s Connor Green gave us an idea of what he could provide to the lineup as an upgrade to the left side.

Nurse would be a solid option on the top pairing, giving defenseman Charlie McAvoy room to breathe on the ice, as the defensive defenseman would utilize his size (6-foot-4, 215 pounds) to create space for him to work.

He’s capable of playing on the penalty kill and power play and averaged 20:05 time on ice this season. In addition to being a defenseman who can eat minutes, he isn’t afraid of laying the body, adding 136 blocks and 161 hits in 2025-26.

If you’re not familiar with his game, here’s a scouting report from Sports Forecaster:

An interesting combination of skill and snarl, he can play huge minutes effectively on an every-game basis. He skates well, can generate plenty of offense and contribute on both special teams. He is also willing to bang bodies and get in front of shots, and will step up to defend his teammates if needed. Has to be careful not to take himself out of position when going for the big hit or jumping into the play.

Nurse is an upgrade from other players on the Bruins’ left side if we’re examining this from the outside looking in. He’s played all 798 games of his NHL career in an Oilers uniform and recorded 324 points (88 goals, 236 assists), reaching the Stanley Cup Final twice under head coach Kris Knoblauch.

What Would a Trade For Darnell Nurse Look Like?

Nurse’s contract at $9.25 million AAV is already cost-prohibitive for the Bruins, who are in the midst of a retool, and to make a deal work, general manager (GM) Stan Bowman will have to retain a percentage of his salary.

If this can’t be done, GM Don Sweeney could get a third team involved to make the math work for all involved. However, that is one obstacle that both the Oilers and Bruins are going to have to overcome if they’re serious about this working.

There have been numerous trades out there involving Mason Lohrei (which would relieve the Bruins of $3.25 million in cap space); you’d almost think that a pick would have to be attached, especially if Bowman retains any part of his salary.

Another option could be a one-for-one trade, Hampus Lindholm for Nurse, which could be the easier option, but the Oilers would need to retain to make the math work again.

While both seem like solid options, the Edmonton Journal’s Jim Matheson doesn’t believe Lohrei would be a good fit.

They want to move on from fellow defenceman Mason Lohrei, 25. The Oilers would love the money, $3.25 million for one more year, then he is a restricted free-agent. But Lohrei screams third pairing with Ty Emberson. He’s not a staunch defender. He was a forward who moved to defence in his teens. Good skater, likes to hammer the puck, prince of a kid, some temerity in his end.

The Bruins have to make a quick, but informed decision, as they could be beaten by other teams who could afford the bruising defenseman, in the Anaheim Ducks, who have the pieces and cap space to make a trade work. Although in the article above, Matheson believes Rasmus Ristolainen might be a better option for the Ducks if they move on from Radko Gudas and Jacob Trouba.

In the end, it’ll come down to which team Nurse is willing to waive his no-movement clause for.

Move Money to Make It Work

The Bruins have been linked to multiple defensemen the past two days, and if they plan on adding “piss and vinegar” through Nurse, they’ll have to prioritize the cap to make this a reality. The Bruins need help on the left side as McAvoy’s partner this past season was Jonathan Aspirot, who doesn’t have the same skillset as Nurse.
