Blues Sign Dillon Dube to 1-Year, One-Way, Contract

The St. Louis Blues have signed forward Dillon Dube to a one-year, one-way, contract, according to Jeremy Rutherford. The deal is worth $850,000.

Dube Back With the Blues

Dube, after being acquitted in the 2018 Hockey Canada sexual assault scandal, signed a tryout contract with the Blues. He then spent the season in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Springfield Thunderbirds.

Dube scored 20 goals in the regular season with the Thunderbirds, reminding everyone of his offensive abilities. In the Calder Cup Playoffs, Dube scored five goals to lead the team.

Prior to the scandal that paused his career, Dube spent six seasons with the Calgary Flames.

Blues Add Depth

After buying out Jonathan Drouin’s contract, it makes sense Blues general manager Alexander Steen would want to add another forward on the roster for depth. Furthermore, Dube knows the organization’s system already and will not be unfamiliar with how things are ran.

Dube should not expect to be a regular in the lineup. At best, he will be an extra forward who is a healthy scratch but will play every so often. Do not be surprised to see Dube go back to the AHL until an injury requires his services.

Logjam of Forwards?

The Blues may have a slight abundance of forwards as this is the third they have signed today.

However, that is not a bad thing. For starters, they may still be trying to move some larger contracts, such as Pavel Buchnevich’s and/or Pius Suter’s. Furthermore, having extra forwards will be beneficial when injuries arise or if younger players such as Otto Stenberg or Dalibor Dvorsky struggle and need time to reset.

Is this a signing that moves the needle? No, but it does make sense. There is still a lot that can happen to the Blues roster for it to take shape, and a lot of time for it to happen.
