Capitals Sign Boone Jenner to 4-Year Deal

The Washington Capitals have signed center Boone Jenner to a four-year contract worth $23 million, carrying an average annual value of $5.75 million, according to Mark Scheig.

Jenner was selected with the 37th overall pick by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut in 2013 and has played 808 games across 13 seasons in the NHL, all with the Blue Jackets. He missed most of the 2024-25 season due to injury and is coming off a season in which he scored 13 goals and totalled 38 points in 67 games.

Capitals Getting Veteran Leader

Jenner had been a veteran leader in the Blue Jackets locker room for a long time. He has worn a letter since 2015-16, when he was named an alternate captain, took the captaincy from Nick Foligno in 2021-22, and has held it ever since.

The 6-foot-2, 207-pound Dorchester, Ontario, native is a true power forward. He is highly physical at both ends of the ice, still moves pretty well for his size, and reached his highest top speed in the NHL Edge era (since 2021-22) last season. He has an excellent shot, which has helped him score 20 or more goals four times in his career, with a career high of 30 in 2015-16.

The other most valuable piece to Jenner’s game is his consistency in the faceoff circle. His career draw win percentage is 54%, and he has finished with a win rate above 50% in 11 straight seasons.

Jenner Can Still Be Effective

The 33-year-old, after having his birthday in mid-June, can certainly still have an impact for seasons to come.

Being squeezed out of the Blue Jackets after they signed Charlie Coyle, a similar player, to a six-year extension may suggest some sort of decline in Jenner’s play. However, his 0.56 points per game in 2025-26 is right in line with his 0.52 per game average throughout his career, even with his lowest average ice time since the 2016-17 season.

At this point in his career, Jenner will likely continue his transition into more of a depth role, as he did with the Blue Jackets last season. However, his hard-nosed approach, combined with efficient offensive production, will make him a player Spencer Carbery can move throughout the lineup and play in various situations.
