The offseason was filled with positive changes, and fans are excited to see if the team can find success after facing countless struggles last season. The Devils are now under serious pressure, with a revitalized top six, improved secondary scoring, and an unconventional three-goalie rotation.

Could the Devils Land Connor Hellebuyck?

Rumors involving the Winnipeg Jets’ number one goalie have been circulating all summer long, but Hellebuyck made his decision to request a trade public at the end of August. His agent, Ray Petkau, released an official statement in which he expressed gratitude for the Jets organization while also explaining his reasons for wanting a trade.

The Devils remain frontrunners for acquiring the three-time Vezina Trophy winner. Currently, they have three goalies on their roster: Jake Allen, Nico Daws, and David Rittich. It’s still uncertain who their starter will be, or if all three netminders will make the final cut — especially since Daws has never found himself in a full-time backup role.

Meaning, a blockbuster trade for Hellebuyck could be in the cards for New Jersey, but the Jets would require quite the haul in return. A recently suggested package from The Hockey Writers included Daws, Dawson Mercer, Seamus Casey, and a first-round pick.

There’s no denying that a goalie of Hellebuyck’s caliber would grant the Devils contender status. Not only would they have a guaranteed starter, but his presence would guarantee a stability in net that the club has not had in a long time. Sunny Mehta has already proven that he’s capable of making high-profile trades, but acquiring Hellebuyck would be the cherry on top of an already successful first offseason as general manager.

Luke Evangelista’s Excitement for New Jersey

On Thursday, the newest Devil joined NHL Network to discuss the trade that sent him to New Jersey. Evangelista revealed that he was preparing to return to Nashville when he received the call from his agent that would change the course of his career. The Devils sent first- and second-round picks in the 2028 NHL Draft to acquire him — a decision that promises only good things for their top-six forward group.

“I’m so excited about the idea of coming to Jersey, playing for an elite squad, and making a playoff push,” said Evangelista. The 24-year-old also revealed that conversations with Mehta and head coach Sheldon Keefe immediately put his mind at ease, providing a better understanding of how he’ll fit in with their current group.

Once more, the Devils are placing an emphasis on underrated and undervalued players. Evangelista recorded a career high of 56 points last season, earning a reputation as a smart playmaker.

However, a recent feature revealed another side of the Swiss native, who returns to his hometown of Herisau each summer, reconnecting with his roots and decompressing after a long NHL season.

A camera crew documented glimpses of his summer in the YouTube special, “Greetings From Switzerland: Timo Meier Returns Home.” The video opens with beautiful scenery throughout the Swiss countryside, showcasing the quiet village he calls home during the summer months.

From there, Meier gives a guided tour of his jersey collection — everything from his first soccer sweater to his most recent jersey for Team Switzerland. He also shares childhood photos and memorabilia, recalling his early days playing hockey. During the offseason, it’s always been important for Meier to make time for the places and people he grew up with, in between training and spending time with his family.

It starts with his youth hockey camp, which wrapped up its seventh year over the summer. When asked about the program, he revealed how much it means to be a role model for aspiring young players. “As an athlete, you have that possibility to come in and make their face light up, it’s something that I don’t take for granted and try to really do it as much as I can. It means a lot to me,” said Meier.

Other cameos included his childhood best friend, trainers, and teammates, along with his parents and sister. Everyone shared the same sentiment — that Meier’s passion for the sport is unmatched, and that he’ll never forget his humble beginnings.
