The St. Louis Blues are bringing back a familiar face, announcing Friday that the team has re-signed forward Oskar Sundqvist to a one-year, two-way contract.
General manager Alexander Steen confirmed the deal, which carries a value of $850,000 at the NHL level and $300,000 in the American Hockey League (AHL). The move keeps a trusted depth forward in the organization as the Blues continue to shape their roster ahead of the upcoming season.
Sundqvist, 32, has long been a reliable presence in St. Louis, known for his physical style, defensive awareness and ability to play in a variety of roles. His return gives the Blues a veteran option who can be used in key defensive situations and on the penalty kill.
Last season, Sundqvist appeared in 52 games for the Blues, recording 17 points on five goals and 12 assists. While his offensive numbers remain modest, his value comes from consistency, effort, and his ability to handle difficult minutes when called upon.

Across two separate stints with the Blues, Sundqvist has appeared in 432 games, totaling 141 points with 52 goals and 89 assists. He has been a staple in the team’s bottom six, bringing energy and physicality while maintaining a responsible two-way game.
He also played a key role in the Blues’ Stanley Cup championship in 2019, appearing in 25 postseason games during that run. His contributions helped the franchise secure its first title and established him as a respected figure within the organization.
Sundqvist’s return comes at an interesting time for the Blues, who have an increasing number of young forwards pushing for NHL opportunities. With prospects continuing to develop and compete for roster spots, the team keeps a veteran depth piece around who can help stabilize the lineup while those younger players work their way into larger roles.
His familiarity with the organization and experience at the NHL level make him a valuable presence both on and off the ice. He provides insurance in the bottom six and gives the coaching staff a dependable option who can step into different situations without disrupting the structure of the lineup.
Over the course of his NHL career, Sundqvist has played 545 regular-season games in the NHL with teams including the Detroit Red Wings, Minnesota Wild, and Pittsburgh Penguins. He has recorded 181 points on 67 goals and 114 assists. His experience across multiple teams adds another layer of value to a roster that continues to balance youth with veteran leadership.
The two-way structure of the contract suggests Sundqvist will compete for his role in training camp, but his track record and familiarity with the team could give him an advantage. As the Blues continue to evaluate their roster, bringing Sundqvist back provides stability, experience and a clear understanding of the team’s identity heading into the new season.
