Oilers News & Rumours: Schedule Reveal, Jack Campbell Retires, McDavid Linked to Flyers

The Edmonton Oilers have made many changes this summer, and while the offseason has been fairly quiet recently, there are a few things going on around the team.

In this edition of Oilers News and Rumours, we take a look at the Oilers’ schedule release, the retirement of former starting goaltender Jack Campbell, and a ridiculous rumour connecting Connor McDavid to the Philadelphia Flyers.

Oilers Reveal 2026-27 Schedule

The Oilers, along with every other team in the NHL, released their full schedule for the 2026-27 season on Thursday (Jul. 16).

They will open the season against the Vancouver Canucks in back-to-back games. The first one will be at home in Edmonton, the second will be away in Vancouver.

Jack Campbell Announces Retirement

In a video posted to his Instagram account, former Oilers’ starting goaltender Jack Campbell announced that he was retiring from professional hockey, and becoming an identity and performance coach.

Campbell played just one full season with the Oilers, and part of a second season, before he was assigned to the American Hockey League (AHL), where he finished his career. The Oilers bought out the remainder of his contract, and he joined the Detroit Red Wings’ organization, playing 14 games in the 2024-25 season, before stepping away from hockey.

He finishes his career with 176 career games under his belt, winning 93 of them, posting a 2.76 goals-against-average (GAA) and a .909 save percentage (SV%), adding ten shutouts.

Outrageous Rumour Links McDavid to Flyers

It is clear we are in the middle of the boring part of the NHL offseason, now that a ridiculous claim about Connor McDavid’s future has been made. Every offseason, it seems as though someone tries to predict that McDavid could be leaving the Oilers, even though he has term left on his contract.

In a recent statement made by Todd Fedoruk, McDavid was linked to the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Flyers are in the market for a true star player, and Todd Fedoruk thinks Connor McDavid could be on the table.

The claim from Fedoruk makes no sense. McDavid’s agent wouldn’t have to call teams looking for work, and even if he was doing that, it opens up tampering issues.

McDavid has made it clear he wants to win with the Oilers, and is completely focused on winning a Stanley Cup with the team that drafted him. Any speculation that suggests otherwise is incorrect, and outrageous.

After the Oilers did everything they needed in the offseason to improve their team and put themselves in a great position to push for their first championship since 1990, there is no reason to believe McDavid won’t be extending long-term with the Oilers when his current two-year deal is up.
