The Edmonton Oilers and goaltender Cam Talbot have inked a three-year contract extension Sunday. The deal carries an AAV of $4.167 million for a three-year total of $12.5 million, according to TSN’s Darren Dreger.
Talbot also gets a no-move clause for the first two years and a modified no-trade clause in the third year, according to Andy Trickland and Dreger.
Talbot was one of the first acquisitions made by new Oilers GM Peter Chiarelli in the summer. He sent the 57th, 79th and 184th picks to the New York Rangers for Talbot and the 209th pick in the 2015 draft.
Talbot’s time in Edmonton hasn’t been a smashing success so far, with a record of 8-13-3 and a .914 save percentage and a .911 even strength save percentage. It’s irregular that his even strength save percentage would be lower than his all situation mark, but Talbot hasn’t allowed a short-handed goal this season and has a pretty solid .912 save percentage when his team is on the kill.
Nonetheless, Talbot has made his case recently with a .925 even strength save percentage since December 15.
Chiarelli must be satisfied with Talbot’s audition. He was set to become a UFA at the end of the season. Part of the cost there may have been just having to satisfy Talbot. There were other teams making offers to the Rangers to acquire him over the summer and there would likely be interest again should he have hit free agency. It will make him the 24th highest paid goaltender in the NHL.
Talbot’s counterpart, Anders Nilsson, has been good in spurts as well, arriving via trade in the summer as well. Nilsson is set to become a restricted free agent on July 1.
