In the second period’s closing moments in Game 6, Sidney Crosby scored a huge goal that allowed the Pittsburgh Penguins to enter the third period against the Tampa Bay Lightning with a three-goal head start.
As the Lightning moved out of the zone, winger Patric Hornqvist stopped the breakout just into the neutral zone, allowing Crosby to grab the puck and turn back onto the attack. It started with just Crosby and four Lightning skaters in the area and ended with nothing between Crosby and Tampa netminder Andrei Vasilevskiy.
Crosby went five-hole and climbed the record books, tying Patrick Kane for the fifth most all-time playoff goals (49) among active players. He also moves to 39th all-time in postseason points with 132, passing (future Hall of Famer?) Steve Larmer and ties Esa Tikkanen.
The goal would stand as the game-winner, with the Penguins pouring it on in the closing minutes to win 5-2 on the back of a Brian Rust breakaway goal and a Nick Bonino empty-netter.
