Grading Rangers’ Extension for Newly Acquired Pavel Dorofeyev

The New York Rangers made an impressive splash in the trade market, acquiring Pavel Dorofeyev from the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for three draft picks. The Golden Knights received the 26th and 92nd overall picks in the 2026 NHL Draft, while also bringing in a top-10 protected first-round pick in 2028.

Dorofeyev was acquired as a pending restricted free agent (RFA) and needed a new contract, which came shortly after the trade announcement. The Rangers signed him to a seven-year deal worth $11 million annually.

There was some immediate pushback from fans, who were calling it a massive overpay, considering the majority of Dorofeyev’s offensive production came from the power play, rather than at even strength. While some fans argued that, with a rising salary cap, this deal could end up being a steal for the Rangers.

The reality is, Dorofeyev is dominant, and might be one of the most underrated players in the NHL. Last season, he scored 37 goals and added 27 assists for 64 points through 82 games. In the playoffs, he scored 12 goals and added four assists for 16 points through 22 games. Throughout his career, he has scored 92 goals and added 57 assists for 149 points through 231 games, which comes out to a 0.65 points-per-game average.

Dorofeyev Acquisition Proves Rangers Want to Contend

If nothing else, the Dorofeyev acquisition shows that the Rangers don’t want to have another season where they have no chance of pushing for a Stanley Cup, they want to get back into the playoffs and get back into contention.

After losing Artemi Panarin in a trade with the Los Angeles Kings, the Rangers have seemingly been searching for his replacement, and they may have found it in Dorofeyev. The Rangers had a solid power play last season, and Dorofeyev could step in and be someone who helps them keep it at an elite level.

There is obviously some risk associated with signing a young player to a contract with an $11 million cap hit, as there is with any player signing for that much, but combine the rising cap with the fact the Rangers pulled the trigger on acquiring someone that not many people realized was available, and it’s a solid move.

Sneakily, the Rangers are bringing in someone who has a strong defensive side to his game as well, and it flies under the radar as one of Dorofeyev’s strengths.

This is a solid, but risky, deal for the Rangers. I think they place Dorofeyev on their top line right away, and I think he helps replace the production that the team has lost over the past couple of seasons.

Extension Grade: A-

The Rangers still have a lot of work to do to be considered contenders heading into next season, but this is a fantastic start for them.
