We have our first big trade of the 2026 NHL Draft. Just as the night was getting underway, Darren Dreger reported that the New York Rangers were acquiring Pavel Dorofeyev from the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for a package of draft picks. Here are the full details:
Rangers receive:
- Pavel Dorofeyev
Golden Knights receive:
- 2026 1st-RD pick (Originally the Stars’)
- 2026 3rd-RD pick (92OA)
- 2028 Top-10 protected first
The Rangers were among the most disappointing teams in the NHL this season, and goal-scoring was a significant reason. Dorofeyev is one of the best young scorers in the NHL, and he should help, though there are some questions about the fit. As for the Golden Knights, this feels like a very light return for one of their best shooters.
Rangers Get a Needed Scorer
How many games this season did Rangers fans have to suffer through with a lack of goal-scoring, especially at MSG? There’s still work to do to improve their forward group, but Dorofeyev should provide a significant upgrade.
Dorofeyev finished with 49 goals between the regular season and playoffs this season, and it was the second consecutive year he totaled 30+ goals during the regular season. His shot and finishing ability are his strengths, but he’s not just a one-trick pony.
Dorofeyev has great hockey sense, especially in the offensive zone. He finds open space in high-danger areas, which allows him to use his shot and finishing ability to great effect. He’s also a weapon on the power play due to his shot, and he’s an effective two-way winger.

Among the concerns with Dorofeyev is his skating. He’s far from the fleetest of foot, and the Rangers are already not the fastest team. I also mentioned the fit with the Rangers. The Golden Knights got the most out of Dorofeyev because they have playmaking chops to set him up.
Right now, the Rangers don’t really have that. J.T. Miller isn’t the player he once was, and Mika Zibanejad is more of a shooter than a playmaker. Will they be able to maximize his strengths as Vegas did with Jack Eichel, Mitch Marner, etc.? That remains to be seen.
Another red flag for me is, why are the Golden Knights getting rid of a player who nearly potted 50 goals between the regular season and playoffs? He’s reportedly signing a seven-year extension worth $11 million per year with the Rangers. Given his age and skill set, you’d think the Golden Knights would want to sign Dorofeyev, so what are they seeing (or not seeing) compared to the rest of us?
Still, I like this deal for the Rangers. They need more goal-scoring in their top six, and they gave up nothing of consequence to acquire him. He’s not the type of player who suddenly changes the overall outlook for a franchise, so GM Chris Drury still has work to do. They’re still in the mushy middle of the NHL, but this is certainly a good starting point for retooling the roster.
Rangers Grade: B+
Golden Knights Get a Light Return, But What’s Next?
The Golden Knights seem to know when it’s time to cut bait with a player. They have a long history of doing this, and they’re usually not wrong when they make ruthless decisions such as this. Still, not getting more in return for Dorofeyev was a bit surprising.
The Rangers held the fifth overall pick tonight, but they managed to retain that and use it to select defenseman Alberts Smits. It feels like the fifth overall pick would have been pretty reasonable for Dorofeyev, but all they received was a late first and two other draft picks.
It’s also a bit surprising the Golden Knights didn’t receive a roster player, but it wouldn’t surprise me if they have their sights set on a big fish. Maybe that’s Dylan Larkin. Maybe that’s Zach Werenski, but the Golden Knights are always up to something. It’ll be interesting to see their next move, but this does feel like a light return for a high-end shooter.
Golden Knights Grade: C+
