Hurricanes Sign Swedish Defenseman Noel Fransén to a 3-Year ELC

Even on the eve of Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Final against the Montreal Canadiens, the Carolina Hurricanes’ front office continues to be busy. After extending Mark Jankowski to a two-year contract on May 11 and Charlie Cerrato to a three-year entry-level contract (ELC) on May 12, management added another player a week later, signing defenseman Noel Fransén.

Fransén Is North America-Bound

On Wednesday morning, the Hurricanes announced that they signed Swedish blueliner Noel Fransén to a three-year, entry-level contract. The 69th overall pick of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft will begin his North American pro career next season when his ELC kicks in. At the NHL level, Fransén will make $850,000 in 2026-27, $900,000 in 2027-28, and $950,000 in 2028-29. In the American Hockey League (AHL), he will make $85,000 in all three seasons, with signing bonuses worth $270,000.

Upon the announcement, general manager Eric Tulsky stated, “Noel has all of the attributes we look for in a Carolina Hurricanes defenseman. He has the mobility to close quickly on a play, as well as the speed to be active on offensive transitions. We’re looking forward to seeing him in North America next season.”

Heading into the 2024 Draft, Fransén was viewed as an offensive defenceman with a strong skating ability to create off the rush. He used his mobility to link plays from the defensive zone to the offensive zone, and his speed in transition gave him chances to attack with quick passes and fill in the gaps.

After being selected by the Hurricanes, assistant general manager Darren Yorke stated about Fransén, “He’s an incredibly offensively gifted player. He was able to do almost what he wanted when he was playing in the Swedish junior league, whether it was skate around guys, skate through them, skate underneath them with the skill level, and score from the blue line. At the same time, he’s still able to defend.”

In his career, Fransén tallied two goals and three points in 18 career games over three seasons with Farjestad BK of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL). During the 2025-26 season, he tallied six goals and 14 points in 38 HockeyAllsvenskan games with BIK Karlskoga, and one goal and two points in 13 SHL games. He also scored 22 goals and 48 points in 54 games with Farjestad BK’s junior team over four seasons, and 11 goals and 34 points in 44 games at the U18 level.

Fransén to Join the Chicago Wolves

Fransén will be joining an already stacked Chicago Wolves team in the AHL, with players like Charles Alexis Legault, Ronan Seeley, and Joel Nystrom on the blue line. The team is one win away from the Western Conference Final in the Calder Cup Playoffs. Head coach Spiros Anastas knows how to work with young players, especially on defense. Adding a strong offensive defenseman in Fransén will be a boost to the Wolves in 2026-27.

This is a solid deal to bring another young player to North America and see what he can do in the Hurricanes’ system. He has already shown flashes of what it takes to be a Hurricanes defenseman; it’s now about honing those skills. Anastas has shown he can develop defensemen so that they can be called up at any time and fit in seamlessly. While he is only 20 and will need time to develop, Fransén will be one to watch over the next three seasons.
