The Carolina Hurricanes wrapped up their four-game homestand on Friday night (March 14) against the Detroit Red Wings. It was their last home game for the next few days as they start a four-game road trip from Philadelphia to California for their three-game West Coast trip. Before they left, however, they were also seeking their sixth straight win. As the final horn sounded, the Hurricanes won 4-2 over the Red Wings.
Game Recap
The Hurricanes created many chances on Red Wings netminder Petr Mrazek, the same one who helped the Hurricanes make the playoffs in 2019. However, the Red Wings were the ones to cash in with under two minutes left as Alex DeBrincat broke the ice. He was able to get the puck past Frederik Andersen to make it a 1-0 lead for the visitors. Carolina outshot Detroit 9-6 but were down 1-0 after the first 20 minutes of play. There’s not much they can do when they create more chances but find themselves on the other side of the scoreboard.

The second period was all Carolina as the Hurricanes scored three unanswered goals to go from 1-0 down to up 3-1. It all started just 22 seconds into the middle frame as Taylor Hall tipped a Jesperi Kotkaniemi shot past Mrazek. His 11th of the season tied the game 1-1. That was not all as Kotkaniemi had another shot five minutes later get tipped again, this one from Jack Roslovic who scored his 21st goal of the season. That was Kotkaniemi’s second assist of the night and his 30th point of the season. Going into the game, he already beat last season’s point total (27) and was now sitting at 30 not even 66 full games into 2024-25.
The third goal of the period for the Hurricanes was scored by Jalen Chatfield, his sixth of the season to complete the three-goal run. Carolina was buzzing all game, but the second period really made the momentum go in the Hurricanes’ favor. The home side outshot the visitors 13-6 (22-12 after 40 minutes). After two periods, the Hurricanes were up 3-1 going into the second intermission.

The third period saw the Red Wings bring the game to within one as Michael Rasmussen drove to the net. He got past Roslovic and took an extra couple of whacks of the puck with his stick. Eventually, it got past Andersen and made it a 3-2 game. Andersen and the penalty killers turned away the Red Wings a couple of times throughout the period.
