In today’s NHL rumors rundown, the Minnesota Wild are still waiting to see if Quinn Hughes feels like he owes them one. Meanwhile, one scribe tried to explain why the Detroit Red Wings are taking their sweet time on naming a new GM. The Carolina Hurricanes might have unfinished business on Alexander Nikishin trade discussions. Finally, the Calgary Flames could have a numbers problem on the back end before camp opens.
Wild, Hughes: An Unwritten IOU?
If Hughes wanted to maximize his odds of eventually playing with brother Jack, the smartest move would be to not sign long-term in Minnesota. Still, Michael Russo reported on The Sheet this week that he still expects Hughes to ink an extension with the Wild.
As cited by @RinkyReport, Russo’s theory is that Hughes recognizes what it cost Minnesota to acquire him — Marco Rossi, Zeev Buium, Liam Öhgren, and a first-round pick — and feels some obligation to pay that back, at least in the form of a workable contract term. Russo describes him as loyal to Guerin specifically. Guerin, for his part, says only that both sides are still working through the details and remain in regular contact.

Fans have jumped all over this report, suggesting that Hughes owes the Wild absolutely nothing. It’s not his responsibility to pay back the Wild for making a trade that didn’t include an extension. So too, the way contracts have changed in the NHL, expecting Hughes to offer concessions with old comparables just isn’t logical.
Red Wings’ GM Search Drags On
Detroit remains without a general manager well into the offseason, prompting questions about whether the delay signals anything about a potential Jeff Greenberg hire (current GM of the Detroit Tigers). Some are wondering if the Red Wings were waiting for the MLB trade deadline to pass and for a better time to bring him in.
Max Bultman of The Athletic writes:
“…I get where you’re going with the connection to the MLB trade deadline having just passed. But I wouldn’t necessarily call the timeline a “clue” to that end. They’re going through the process, lengthy as it may be.”

Bultman also points out that the Red Wings aren’t racing rival teams for candidates the way clubs searching right after the season often are, since they’re currently the only team with an opening. That gives them room to take their time, even with deals needing to get done and a Dylan Larkin trade blowing in the wind.
Hurricanes Keeping Tabs on Nikishin Market
Alexander Nikishin trade talks involving Carolina have been an on-again, off-again storyline for a while, and Elliotte Friedman says that’s not changing anytime soon. Sources have told Friedman it’s a situation worth watching closely between now and the start of training camp, suggesting momentum could pick back up before puck drop even if nothing is imminent yet.
There is chatter that Nikishin might be asking for more than $8 million per season on an extension. Understandably, the Hurricanes are hesitant, even with NHL contracts ballooning like they are.
Flames Could Have Extra Defensemen
Calgary is carrying nine defensemen for six regular spots this season, and the Calgary Sun’s Daniel Austin floated the idea that more trades could be coming before opening night. Kevin Bahl, Simon Nemec, Zayne Parekh, and Zach Whitecloud project as the top-four pairing, leaving Yan Kuznetsov, Jake Middleton, Brayden Pachal, Joel Hanley, and Hunter Brzustewicz to sort out the rest.
Colleague Kent Wilson pointed to Whitecloud as the likeliest trade candidate given his experience, reputation, and affordable $2.75 million cap hit over two more seasons — though moving him would leave the Flames’ blueline leaning heavily on younger, less proven pieces.
They also write:
“…Connor Zary could be available on the trade market around the NHL Draft in June, it does feel like there are moves Conroy could make up front, too. Ultimately, nobody should be expecting a flurry of end-of-August activity, but there remains a possibility that there could be a trade or two before camp kicks off.”
