In today’s NHL rumors rundown, Patrik Laine remains unsigned, but it might not be for long. At the same time, David Perron is also waiting for the right opportunity, and the Detroit Red Wings might be the most logical landing spot. The Boston Bruins continue to face questions about Pavel Zacha’s future. Finally, the Florida Panthers get good news on Aleksander Barkov, but are holding their breath after Brad Marchand suffered a scary lower-body injury.
Patrik Laine Still Waiting for the Right Opportunity
It’s somewhat surprising that Patrik Laine remains an unrestricted free agent, especially considering the potential value he could provide on a one-year, incentive-based contract. The 28-year-old has seven 20-goal seasons on his résumé and, despite concerns about his five-on-five play, could still be a significant weapon on the power play.
The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun noted during a recent TSN Insider Trading update that both the Calgary Flames and Detroit Red Wings have thrown Laine’s name around internally. His agent, Andy Scott, says Laine is healthy, skating daily in Florida and eager to get back into an NHL lineup. The Flames could use him on their 31st-ranked power play, but want to see the young kids first. The Red Wings have also talked to his camp, but everything in Detroit is on pause.
David Perron Also Waiting for a New NHL Home
Patrik Laine isn’t the only veteran winger waiting for an opportunity. David Perron, now 38, is also looking for the right situation and remains committed to playing this season. His agent, Allan Walsh, confirmed that Perron is actively searching for a fit that works for both him and his family.

LeBrun writes:
“Perron, who is skating back home in Sherbrooke, Quebec, staying in shape, had 13 goals in 65 games split between the Ottawa Senators and the Red Wings last season. I wouldn’t rule out the Red Wings as a potential reunion fit, but again, Detroit has a few things going on right now.”

While his offensive production has declined from his prime, his experience and ability to contribute in different roles could still make him an attractive depth option for a contender.
Pavel Zacha’s Future With Bruins Getting Interesting
Pavel Zacha’s future in Boston could become one of the more intriguing situations to monitor as the season progresses. His name surfaced when the Bruins discussed a potential trade involving Columbus Blue Jackets forward Kirill Marchenko, although Columbus ultimately went in another direction. Zacha remains a valuable 29-year-old center, but contract talks between his camp and Boston have reportedly failed to make significant progress over the past few months.
The Bruins may have been surprised by his initial asking price, though the rising cost of contracts around the NHL could make that number look more reasonable now. The two sides remain in communication, leaving the door open for an extension.
A trade could still happen. If Boston falls out of the playoff race and he remains unsigned heading toward the March 1 trade deadline, it’s likely he could be moved.
Panthers Await Word on Brad Marchand Injury
Following news that Aleksander Barkov’s injury is only 6-8 weeks, the Florida Panthers thought things were looking up. Then Brad Marchand went down. The veteran winger suffered an apparent lower-body injury against the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday night.
Marchand drove toward the net before his left leg went awkwardly underneath him as he collided with the post. He required help from teammates to get off the ice and was unable to put weight on the leg. The Panthers have not announced a diagnosis or timeline.
One doctor who has not examined Marchand suggested an MCL injury could be a concern, while also noting the possibility of a high ankle sprain. For now, the Panthers can only wait for further testing.
