The Penguins have placed their captain on injured reserve. He suffered the injury against Czechia in the quarterfinal after taking a hit from Anaheim Ducks defenceman Radko Gudas. It is a tough blow for an organization that had just worked its way back into a playoff spot.

Crosby to Miss 4 Weeks

After the hit from Gudas, Crosby tried to stay in the game. But following a second collision, he could not put weight on his leg. It was a gut punch for Canada, and for Crosby, who understands these Olympics might have been his last.

Crosby admitted after the gold medal loss to the United States that sitting out was not easy.

“It was a tough decision. In your head you always want to be out there and find every way possible, but not at the expense of what needs to be done. And then watching how we played today, the guys played incredible.”

The timing is far from ideal. The Penguins currently sit second in the Metropolitan Division and had started to show the front office that this group might be worth adding to at the deadline. Without Crosby, that conversation could change, his injury leaves a massive hole in the lineup.

Now the focus shifts to whether the Penguins can stay afloat in the playoff race over the next month. If they can, and Crosby returns on schedule, they will hope to pick up right where they left off.
