On June 9, the Los Angeles Kings made an interesting decision by hiring former New York Rangers head coach Peter Laviolette as their new head coach. With a reputation built over more than two decades behind NHL benches, few coaches can match his resume. Laviolette’s hiring represents a major statement from a Kings organization that believes it has the talent necessary to compete for a championship but needs the right leadership to guide in that direction.
Arrival in Los Angeles
The coaching change comes after a disappointing postseason for the Kings that saw them swept by the Colorado Avalanche in the first round. Despite their roster filled with established veterans and emerging young talent, Los Angeles has struggled to break through in the past five seasons. The organization parted ways with Jim Hiller during the 2025-26 season and promoted D.J. Smith on an interim basis. A Stanley Cup champion with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006, Laviolette has also taken the Philadelphia Flyers and Nashville Predators to the Stanley Cup Final, consistently guiding his teams into playoff contention. General manager Ken Holland chose a head coach with a proven history of transforming teams into champions.
Holland acknowledged the talent and value Laviolette brings to the organization, saying “when you look at his resume, all of the teams that he’s been with and the impact that he’s had on those teams, the first couple of years, right off the bat. Pro hockey is hard to win at and he’s done a lot of winning.”
What makes Laviolette attractive to the Kings is his ability to deliver immediate results. Throughout his NHL career, he has consistently improved teams shortly after arriving. Whether it was the Carolina Hurricanes, Flyers, Predators, Washington Capitals, or New York Rangers, Laviolette has demonstrated an ability to quickly establish structure and a winning culture.
A Strategy Must Be in Place
His most recent stop with the New York Rangers offered another example. In his first season with the Rangers, Laviolette led the club to one of the league’s best records and an appearance in the Eastern Conference Final. Although his tenure ultimately ended after a disappointing follow-up season, his ability to elevate teams remains one of his core characteristics. For the Kings, that experience could be pivotal. Despite possessing a strong core group, the organization must still determine how to get the most out of its roster and turn regular-season success into deeper playoff runs.

Laviolette’s coaching style has typically emphasized discipline, accountability, and structured team play. His teams are known for being organized and difficult to play against, traits that should fit well with the Kings’ identity. At the same time, he has shown a willingness to adapt his systems to the strengths of his roster.
Breaking Down the Laviolette Hiring
Laviolette enters Los Angeles as the winningest American-born coach in NHL history and ranks among the most successful coaches the league has ever seen. Players understand what he has accomplished and what he expects from his teams. That credibility can be a powerful asset in a locker room seeking a new direction. However, expectations will be high from the moment he steps behind the Kings’ bench. A hire like this isn’t made with a slow rebuild in mind: It’s about speeding up the climb to contention and delivering meaningful playoff results.
Will This Pay Off?
One question on every fan’s and analyst’s mind is, will this recent hire pay off? That will be answered over time as the 2026-27 regular season begins in October. The Kings know they must improve if they hope to join that group. Laviolette’s arrival does not guarantee success, but it provides the organization with a coach who has repeatedly demonstrated an ability to navigate the pressures and challenges of winning in the NHL.
The franchise has invested in a coach whose career has been defined by winning, playoff appearances, and championship dreams. With Laviolette behind the bench, Los Angeles is betting that one of hockey’s most-accomplished coaches can deliver the breakthrough the organization has been searching for.
