Yaroslav Fedoseyev had a busy season, playing in three different leagues within Traktor Chelyabinsk’s system. He spent most of his season in the first league and junior levels, appearing in nine games for Traktor of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). He also dressed for three postseason games during Chelyabinsk’s disappointing showing. While the team suffered a first-round exit, Fedoseyev showed promise in a limited role.

He had a promising first stint with the big boys, netting his first pro goal and earning an encouraging plus-7 differential across nine games. He didn’t play much in the postseason, but in the regular season, he showed continued improvement.
This season, his production didn’t increase as expected, though. He scored 13 points in 24 games in the junior league – not a big improvement over 17 points in 33 games last season. Fedoseyev’s size, skating abilities, and puck skills will catch the attention of scouts, but he needs to show more if he wants to make the move to North America. With Traktor, he played under Canadian coach Ben Groulx.
Yaroslav Fedoseyev – NHL Draft Projection
Fedoseyev projects to be a sixth or seventh-round pick. He has some strengths to his game, like his size, edge work, and puck control, but nothing stands out. He has a long road ahead to develop further in all parts of his game. However, some teams might see him as a worthwhile long-term project.
Instant success isn’t to be expected, but Fedoseyev has the foundation to make him worthy of a selection. He can also play a physical game, which should interest a few teams.
Quotables
“Fedoseyev ripped up the MHL in the first 11 games of the year and earned the promotion to the VHL, where he has fit in nicely. He has not produced offensively at as high of a rate as before, but he is still a positive impact player. He is a good skater and is able to create time and space with his legs. He is also composed and poised with the puck, usually opting for the safe breakout option to his teammate, rather than a risky play.” – Nick Orr, Dobber Prospects
Strengths
- Solid edge work and good skating abilities
- Good size and a potential above-average frame
- Can be dangerous with the puck when he has time…
Under Construction/Improvements to Make
- …but he needs to learn how to create time for himself
- Didn’t show through-the-roof potential, especially in the offensive zone
NHL Potential
Fedoseyev is an interesting late-round option with bottom-four potential. He is a defensive project who can grow into a sixth or seventh defenseman, but needs to work on improving his game, starting with winning a full-time spot in the KHL next season.
