Darnell Nurse’s tenure with the Edmonton Oilers seems to be coming to an end. On June 11, it was reported that the Oilers’ blueliner requested a trade. He has given the organization a list of three to five teams he would consider. However, he still has a full no-movement clause until the summer of 2027, in which it becomes a modified 10-team no-trade list. Therefore, Nurse can choose which teams he would be interested in. But a fresh start would be beneficial.
Edmonton drafted Nurse in the first round (seventh overall) in 2013, and he has played 798 regular-season games, which ranks seventh all-time in franchise history. The Hamilton, Ontario native has also added 100 playoff games to his resume. He has been a durable player, missing only 18 games the past nine seasons. He also logs big minutes, averaging 22:30 per game in his career. He has some value, despite what his critics say.
Unfortunately, his contract is the only reason this conversation is happening. He’s severely overpaid and is starting year five of an eight-year contract with a $9.25 million cap hit. He’s getting top-pairing money, but he’s not a top-pairing player. That contract quickly turned the fan base against him, and both parties need to find a solution.
The Oilers need out of this horrendous contract, and Nurse needs out of the spotlight. The relationship is over, and it’s time to move on. With that said, here are three potential trade destinations for the veteran defenceman.
San Jose Sharks
If Nurse wants to go to a place with less outside noise, the San Jose Sharks could be a great fit. The Sharks are an up-and-coming team with a ton of youth and could use another veteran presence. They have over $40.5 million in cap space this upcoming season, with 12 forwards, four defencemen, and two goalies under contract. So, fitting in Nurse’s contract wouldn’t be a problem, and the Oilers likely wouldn’t need to retain any salary.

The Sharks have massive holes on the blue line, with three of their four contracted defencemen under 23 years old. Nurse is experienced and could provide much-needed leadership to this young group. San Jose was in playoff positioning until they fell off at the end of the season. They missed the playoffs by just four points and are near the end of their rebuild. Nurse can help them push for the playoffs, and by the time the Sharks are truly ready to compete for the Stanley Cup, his contract will be over.
It’s time they take the next step and make the playoffs, even if they don’t go on deep runs. This young core would benefit from playing playoff games, and Nurse can help them get there. Then, once his contract is up, hopefully, the Sharks are where they want to be, and they can move on or extend him to a much cheaper contract. This could be a win-win situation for everyone involved.
Also, Nurse can go from playing with a generational player, Connor McDavid, to a young phenom in Macklin Celebrini. That would likely entice him to waive his no-movement clause for the Sharks, if they currently aren’t on his approved list. I mean, who wouldn’t want to play with Celebrini? After all, the future is teal.
Philadelphia Flyers
It has been heavily rumoured that the Philadelphia Flyers have interest in Nurse. They have nearly $37.5 million in cap space this upcoming season with 12 forwards, five defencemen, and one goalie under contract. The only notable free agents that need new deals are Jamie Drysdale and Trevor Zegras.
They have the money to make it work, and they clearly want to continue being a playoff team in an extremely competitive Metropolitan Division. They made the second round of the playoffs with a relatively inexperienced team. This was their first playoff berth since the pandemic bubble season. Before that, they hadn’t won a playoff round since 2012. They finally had a glimpse of playoff success this season, and they need to make moves to ensure that can be sustained.
Per @FriedgeHNIC & @SportsnetSpec, Darnell Nurse has asked for a trade. I am hearing there is mutual interest between Nurse — nephew of Eagles legend Donovan McNabb — & #Flyers. But what would he cost? How much retention is EDM willing to take? And is there another move?

The Oilers could also take back a bad contract to facilitate a trade. There could be a trade involving Nurse and Sean Couturier. They both have four years remaining on their contracts, with Couturier having a $7.75 million cap hit. If the Oilers don’t want to retain, they could add a draft pick to sweeten the deal. The Flyers would get an upgrade on the blue line, while the Oilers would save some money and fill a need at third-line centre.
Plus, Nurse’s uncle is Donovan McNabb, the legendary Philadelphia Eagles quarterback. So, he has ties to the city. If there’s a hockey deal available, both teams should explore it. The Flyers could be a solid trade partner.
Los Angeles Kings
Why not reunite Nurse with the man who signed his expensive ticket in the first place? Los Angeles Kings general manager Ken Holland signed Nurse to his current contract when he was the Oilers’ general manager. The Kings also have over $18 million of cap space this upcoming season with 11 forwards, five defencemen, and two goalies on the roster. They also need to sign 23-year-old blueliner and restricted free agent Brandt Clarke to a contract.
The left side of their blue line is crowded with Mikey Anderson, Brian Dumoulin, and Joel Edmundson occupying spots. However, being in the Los Angeles market, there is always pressure to win. Therefore, Holland won’t hesitate to make a move if it means improving his team.
Nurse would be an upgrade over Dumoulin and Edmundson, and Holland has familiarity with the 31-year-old defenceman. There’s a comfort level between the general manager and the player. If anyone will take on that full contract, it would be Holland, because he values his veteran defencemen.
On 32 Thoughts, Elliotte Friedman stated that if there’s a Western Conference team on Nurse’s list, it would likely be Los Angeles simply because of the general manager. He also stated that some teams that weren’t on the list asked if they could get on it, meaning that there’s legitimate interest in the defenceman. Friedman believes Edmonton will be able to make a hockey deal, but the biggest limitation is whether or not there will be salary retention.
It will be interesting to see what happens in the coming weeks. Where do you think Nurse will get traded to, if at all? Keep following The Hockey Writers for all your NHL content throughout the offseason.
