After 107 days, the Carolina Hurricanes play meaningful hockey once again. The Hurricanes’ opening-night roster is set, and they enter the 2026-27 season as the defending Stanley Cup Champions, looking to defend their title for the first time in 20 years. Opening night on Tuesday, Sept. 29, will be a special one. The team will raise their second-ever Stanley Cup banner and will begin an 84-game marathon as they seek to win it again. That said, they have to take on the Florida Panthers, who won the Stanley Cup in 2024 and 2025. What are three storylines for the Hurricanes as they get set to begin another season of hockey in Raleigh?
1. Hit the Ground (Ice) Running
There will be a ton of emotions on Tuesday afternoon as the Hurricanes will raise their 2026 Stanley Cup banner. Plus, the Lenovo Center will be rocking as fans celebrate with the team for the first time on home ice since the Stanley Cup Final. While head coach Rod Brind’Amour doesn’t need to remind his guys that last season was last season, it will matter to start on the right foot.
The Panthers will be coming out to ruin the party after missing the playoffs last season. Plus, these two teams do not like each other at all. The Hurricanes will need to come out playing their style of hockey and not get sucked into the physicality and move away from their game. It’ll have to be a full 60-minute effort to claim their first win of the 2026-27 season at home in front of a loud home crowd.
Furthermore, without Seth Jarvis on the top line with Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov, the team will need to stick to their style more than ever. Eric Robinson will take his spot, bringing size, physicality, and speed. Brandon Bussi will get his first home/season opener start for the Hurricanes since joining the team. All eyes will be on him after helping the Hurricanes win a Stanley Cup back in June.
2. Get the Junkyard Dawg Line Feasting Early
One line to watch in the home opener is the “Junkyard Dawg” line featuring Jackson Blake, Logan Stankoven, and Taylor Hall. They were not only the best line for the Hurricanes in the second half of the season, but the playoffs as well. Honestly, they were the best line in all of the NHL during the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs. It helps when Blake led the Hurricanes in assists (13) and points (20), while Stankoven led in goals (11). Plus, it’s hard to forget Hall’s 19-point performance to round out the dominance of the trio.
After their 6-5 comeback win on Thursday night (Sept. 24) against the Nashville Predators, The Hockey Writers asked Hall and Stankoven about the trio playing together to begin the season. Here were their answers:
Stankoven: “Very excited. I think it’s not going to come to us. I think everything is earned, and just because we had success in the playoffs doesn’t mean it’ll translate right away. I think we have that chemistry. We have a recipe now, and it’s about finding it and being more consistent throughout the regular season.”

Hall: “I don’t think it was perfect, but it was fun to get playing, and it was a good atmosphere. The crowd was into it all game. For our line, we work hard. That’s kind of our recipe. If we manage the puck well, then we usually have chances just from our work ethic and our skills. That kind of paid off in the end.”
While it’s not certain the trio will be off the start they had once they began to play together last winter, they certainly didn’t lose a step in the last two preseason games against the Predators. If the Hurricanes can get those three rolling early, they could be in for huge seasons in 2026-27.
3. Quicker Season Starts for Ehlers & Svechnikov
The start to the 2025-26 season was a weird one for Svechnikov and Nikolaj Ehlers. It took Ehlers until Game 13 against the New York Rangers to score his first goal with the Hurricanes. Once he did, he was off to the races. He finished his first season in Raleigh with 26 goals and 71 points. It was the first time he reached 40-plus assists and 70-plus points in a season. Ehlers followed that up with 18 points in 18 games during the 2026 NHL Playoffs.
On Thursday morning between practices, Ehlers told The Hockey Writers when asked about building off his first season in Carolina, “I’ve been here for a year now, so I know how things work now. There is like no adjustment period. I feel comfortable on and off the ice. It’s definitely going to be easier to jump back into things than it was last year, so I’m excited for that.”
Regarding Svechnikov, he didn’t have a point through the first eight games of the season. However, once he did, he went on to tally 70 points in the next 71 games. It was a career season that everyone was waiting for after recovering from knee surgery. If Svechnikov can get off to a roaring start to begin the 2026-27 season, is there a chance for a possible 80-point season for the Russian forward?
It’ll be interesting to see how opening night goes for the Hurricanes, especially with how emotional it’ll be with a banner raising. There will be no shortage of fireworks between the two sides as they kick off the 2026-27 season. While it’s only the first game of an 84-game slate, you always want to get off on the right foot, especially when celebrating a Stanley Cup banner at home.
