Calgary Flames Hire Brad Treliving as New GM

After a four month search, Calgary Flames president of hockey operations Brian Burke reportedly has his man.

According to multiple reports, including ones from TSN’s Bob MacKenzie and Sportsnet’s John Shannon, the Calgary Flames have hired Phoenix Coyotes assistant general manager Brad Treliving as the franchise’s seventh general manager.

A native of Penticton, BC (and son of Dragon’s Den star and Boston Pizza founder Jim Treliving), Brad has quite the extensive hockey background for somebody who’s just 44 years old. He played professional hockey in the AHL, ECHL and IHL. He ran the Western Professional Hockey League and the Central Hockey League. He’s run both the San Antonio Rampage and the Portland Pirates of the American League, as well as served as assistant GM in Phoenix for several years.

The Flames have 33 players under contract for 2014-15 (including three entry-level deals that can slide). In terms of flexibility? The club has just 13 one-way contracts on the books, with a committed cap hit of just $38.17 million.

Treliving inherits a rapidly improving prospect base, an ownership with deep pockets, and a team that over-achieved in 2013-14 due to an insane work ethic and level of buy-in from a club in the first year of a rebuild.
