In today’s NHL rumors rundown, a difficult decision in Montreal has signaled the end of an era for Brendan Gallagher. Why did Martin St. Louis make the decision he made? Meanwhile, the Nashville Predators are aggressively pursuing a top executive from Colorado, and the Avalanche have granted permission for an interview. One insider shoots down a wild Connor McDavid rumor, and could the New York Islanders be open to trading Mathew Barzal? Finally, is Gary Bettman leaving the NHL?
Canadiens Facing Fallout After Gallagher Decision
The Montreal Canadiens are dealing with the aftermath of a tough playoff decision that could mark the end of Brendan Gallagher’s tenure with the team. Head coach Martin St. Louis opted not to play the veteran forward, a move that didn’t sit well with fans — and reportedly weighed heavily on the coach himself.
According to Eric Engels, the decision “killed” St. Louis, who empathized with his forward, having once been in a similar spot. During his playing career, St. Louis was overlooked by Steve Yzerman for the Olympic team, which ended his run with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Ultimately, however, the choice came down to what St. Louis believed gave his team the best chance to win.
Gallagher now appears headed for a fresh start elsewhere. Whether via trade or buyout, the expectation is that he’ll move on this summer. The Vancouver Canucks have already been mentioned as a potential landing spot, with Gallagher reportedly open to the idea of proving he still has plenty left to offer.
Predators Making Strong Push for Avalanche GM
The Nashville Predators are making a serious attempt to reshape their front office, reportedly targeting Colorado Avalanche general manager Chris MacFarland. Several insiders indicate the Predators have received permission to speak with MacFarland, and discussions are already underway.
Nashville appears prepared to offer a significant role — potentially handing him full control of hockey operations. That level of authority, along with a likely pay increase, could be necessary to lure MacFarland away from Colorado, where he currently works under president Joe Sakic.
Canadiens McDavid Rumor Debunked
Montreal continues to be active in the rumor mill, with reports suggesting the team explored several trade options prior to the deadline. GM Kent Hughes has already said he’ll be active in calling GMs to see what’s available.

At the same time, one headline-grabbing rumor involved Connor McDavid reportedly house hunting in Montreal. As one might imagine, that caused a firestorm of unconfirmed theories. One insider has already shut down the chatter.
The Edmonton Oilers captain was not in the city, and the story appears to have been fueled by a case of mistaken identity involving his wife attending an event. “Connor McDavid was not at the Grand Prix in Montreal. He did not do any house shopping. His wife was there. She was here for an event to which she had been invited. Period,” Renaud Lavoie said.
Islanders Exploring Barzal Trade Market
Another intriguing development comes from the New York Islanders, who are reportedly exploring the trade market for star forward Mathew Barzal. The report comes from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun. The move would be driven largely by salary cap considerations, as Barzal carries a $9.15 million cap hit through the 2030-31 season.
He writes:
“Reports indicate the Utah Mammoth kicked tires on Barzal last summer, but opted not to make the move. Barzal, 29, finished with 19 goals and 72 points in 81 games with the Isles last season, but that salary would be tough for the Senators to swallow.”

Is Gary Bettman Stepping Down?
According to Elliotte Friedman, Gary Bettman is set to meet with the media on Tuesday and ahead of Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final. Friedman writes, “According to multiple sources, the commissioner, in conversations with members of the NHL’s Executive Committee, began laying the groundwork for his eventual exit from the current role. He turned 74 today, and is approaching his 34th anniversary on the job.”
Bettman wouldn’t comment or confirm if he’d be discussing that topic today. There is a chance, even if he talks about it, that he’s still got years remaining before he leaves.
