Suggested Trade Sees Devils Land Jason Robertson in Offseason Blockbuster

The offseason is well underway, and one of the best players in the NHL has been at the forefront of trade speculation over the last little while. Dallas Stars’ forward Jason Robertson has been the key focus for several teams over the last couple of days, with reports coming out that he has rejected extensions with the St. Louis Blues and Seattle Kraken.

In a recent article from Elliotte Friedman, he revealed that the Kraken and Stars had agreed to a trade involving Robertson, but Robertson rejected an eight-year extension worth $15 million annually, writing, “According to multiple sources, the Seattle Kraken were given permission by Dallas to talk to Jason Robertson, and offered him approximately $15 million per year on a eight-year deal — but the offer was declined.”

Jeff Marek also reported that the Blues made a massive offer for Robertson, but he wasn’t interested in extending with them.

It seems as though Robertson is being very picky about who he extends with, and rightfully so. However, could the New Jersey Devils be a realistic option to land him? Some trusted pundits believe so.

The Devils recently secured several solid assets in their trade with the Calgary Flames involving Simon Nemec, giving them some extra leverage in a potential blockbuster deal.

In this article, we take a look at a hypothetical deal between the Devils and Stars involving Robertson. Despite some red hot speculation throughout the week, there is no indication that the Devils have made an offer for Robertson, or that Robertson would be interested in extending with the Devils, so keep in mind this is simply a hypothetical idea.

Devils Land Superstar, Stars Get Monstrous Return

There is some speculation that the Stars would be looking for a “Rantanen-type” of trade return for Robertson, and that’s exactly what they will get in this hypothetical deal.

Of course, we are running on the assumption that Robertson would be open to extending with the Devils.

Realistically, the Devils acquire Robertson, with an extension worth around $14-15 million annually over eight seasons, in exchange for Dawson Mercer, Seamus Casey, two first-round picks, and two second-round picks.

The Devils land a superstar to pair alongside Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier, and become true contenders in the Eastern Conference. The Stars on the other hand, receive a solid NHL contributor in Mercer, a potential top-four defender in Casey, and a lot of draft capital.

Those pieces could be used to go find a Robertson replacement, if the Stars choose to do so.

Moving that many pieces for Robertson should be a no-brainer, he is one of the league’s best all-around players, and if the Devils are serious about contending next season, this should be someone they try their hardest to land and extend.
