Connor Hellebuyck Trade Rumors Heat Up as Jets Listen to Offers

The Winnipeg Jets may have entered the offseason expecting to answer questions about how to get back into the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but instead, the biggest storyline has become the future of franchise goaltender Connor Hellebuyck.

Trade speculation surrounding the three-time Vezina Trophy winner reached another level Friday after general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff confirmed the organization is listening to offers. While he stopped short of saying Hellebuyck had requested a trade, his comments did little to quiet the rumors and instead reinforced the idea that Winnipeg is exploring every possible avenue to improve its roster.

Combined with reports that the Jets were close to moving Hellebuyck in a package centered around the Buffalo Sabres’ fourth-overall pick before the NHL Draft, it appears Winnipeg is seriously evaluating whether now is the right time to make one of the biggest trades in franchise history.

Jets Were Reportedly Close to a Massive Draft-Day Deal

The Jets were reportedly engaged in serious discussions with the Sabres involving the fourth-overall selection before Buffalo ultimately used the pick in the blockbuster Bowen Byram trade. Had the deal gone through, Winnipeg would have landed one of the premier assets in the draft while beginning a significant retool around younger talent.

Although the trade never materialized, the fact that Hellebuyck’s name was involved suggests Winnipeg wasn’t simply fielding phone calls—it was actively exploring blockbuster possibilities.

For a player who has spent his entire NHL career with the organization, that represents a dramatic shift.

Cheveldayoff Isn’t Shutting Down the Rumors

Perhaps the biggest development came from Cheveldayoff himself. Rather than dismissing the speculation, the Jets’ general manager openly admitted the organization is listening. “Certainly, as an organization, we’re going to listen,” Cheveldayoff told reporters Friday.

He acknowledged that everyone saw Hellebuyck’s emotional end-of-season media availability before adding, “Certainly, in our exit meetings we had some frank conversations as well, but again, what happens in those meetings certainly stays private.”

Those comments immediately raised eyebrows around the NHL. General managers routinely shut down trade rumors surrounding franchise players. Instead, Cheveldayoff acknowledged there had been meaningful internal discussions while refusing to confirm or deny whether Hellebuyck had requested a move.

Later in the press conference, he expanded on his philosophy regarding trade discussions.”I go back to it, that it’s incumbent upon me to listen—not just on (Hellebuyck); you’re always listening. It’s not just about one singular person; it’s about pick No. 8, it’s about pick No. 71, whatever.”

He continued by explaining that constant communication is simply part of being an NHL general manager. “In this game here, everything changes with phone calls and conversations and stuff like that, but again, at the end of the day, you keep on trying to do the best things that we can for the Winnipeg Jets moving forward here.”

Those quotes don’t necessarily mean Hellebuyck will be traded, but they certainly indicate the organization is willing to explore every option.

Hellebuyck’s Own Words Sparked the Speculation

Much of the current speculation can be traced back to Hellebuyck’s own comments after Winnipeg missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

While refusing to single out teammates, the veteran goaltender made it clear the organization couldn’t continue down the same path. “Complacency is not going to get us moving forward, so something has got to happen.”

He later added, “To just put that same product on the ice, I don’t think it worked for a reason.” Those comments weren’t a trade request, but they reflected a player who believes meaningful change is necessary after another disappointing season. For a goaltender who has dedicated 11 NHL seasons to one franchise, they were among the strongest public comments of his career.

This Is the Perfect Time to Move Him

Trading Hellebuyck would undoubtedly be one of the most difficult decisions Cheveldayoff has ever made. However, from a hockey operations standpoint, there may never be a better opportunity.

Hellebuyck remains one of the NHL’s elite goaltenders despite Winnipeg missing the playoffs. He still has five seasons remaining on his contract, carrying an $8.5 million cap hit, giving acquiring teams long-term cost certainty rather than a short-term rental. Elite starting goaltenders almost never become available with term remaining.

That alone dramatically increases his value. Cheveldayoff himself hinted at that type of thinking when discussing roster construction.”If you can fill some holes in other areas and do things a little bit differently, then you can try to find a way. It’s going to depend on how bad a team wants something. We have needs as well.”

That may have been the clearest indication yet that Winnipeg is willing to consider moving Hellebuyck if the return addresses multiple areas of need.

Instead of relying on one player to carry the franchise every season, the Jets could potentially acquire an NHL-ready player, a top prospect and premium draft capital to reshape their roster for both the short and long term.

The Market May Never Be Better

Several teams around the NHL remain in search of elite goaltending, making this an ideal environment for Winnipeg to maximize Hellebuyck’s value. Buffalo has already been linked. Other contenders looking to upgrade in goal could also emerge as serious suitors throughout the offseason, creating the type of bidding war every general manager hopes for.

Cheveldayoff doesn’t appear to be rushing into anything. He also isn’t closing the door. Instead, he’s doing exactly what every successful executive should—listening.

Whether Hellebuyck ultimately remains in Winnipeg or not, the conversation has changed dramatically over the past week. Reports of a near trade involving Buffalo’s fourth-overall pick, combined with Cheveldayoff’s repeated acknowledgment that the organization is listening to offers, suggest this isn’t simply offseason speculation anymore.

For the first time in his career, Hellebuyck’s future with the Winnipeg Jets feels genuinely uncertain—and if the right package is presented, this summer may prove to be the best opportunity Winnipeg will ever have to reshape its future.
