Stars’ Jason Robertson Expected to File for Arbitration as Contract Talks Continue

The speculation surrounding Jason Robertson‘s future with the Dallas Stars may soon take a major turn.

According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, Robertson has indicated that he will file for salary arbitration ahead of the league’s deadline. If that happens, it will officially eliminate the possibility of another NHL team signing the star winger to an offer sheet this offseason.

It’s a significant development after weeks of speculation surrounding Robertson’s contract situation. With several teams entering the summer armed with cap space, the 26-year-old was viewed as one of the biggest restricted free agents who could potentially become an offer sheet target. Friedman’s report, however, suggests Robertson’s focus remains on reaching a new deal with the Stars rather than exploring opportunities elsewhere.

Arbitration Would Remove the Offer Sheet Threat

Should Robertson officially file for arbitration, the Stars would no longer have to worry about another franchise attempting to lure away one of their cornerstone players.

Instead, negotiations would remain exclusively between Robertson and Dallas. While arbitration can sometimes create headlines, it’s often viewed as a negotiating tool rather than an indication that a player wants out. In Robertson’s case, it appears to be a way of ensuring contract talks continue while also protecting his earning power.

For the Stars, that’s welcome news.

Dallas already faces a challenging salary cap picture while trying to keep its Stanley Cup window open. The possibility of having to match an aggressive offer sheet worth well into eight figures annually would have complicated those plans even further. If Robertson proceeds with arbitration, that uncertainty disappears.

Robertson Has Earned a Significant Raise

Rather than leaving the door open for another team to pursue him, Robertson appears focused on staying in Dallas while making sure he’s paid what he’s worth. Few players have established themselves as consistently as Robertson over the last several seasons. Since becoming a full-time NHL player, he has developed into one of the league’s elite offensive forwards, combining outstanding finishing ability with exceptional vision and hockey IQ.

His 109-point campaign cemented him among the NHL’s premier wingers, and even in seasons where his production hasn’t reached those heights, he’s remained one of Dallas’ most dangerous offensive players. Whether at five-on-five or on the power play, Robertson continues to be one of the driving forces behind the Stars’ success.

Players capable of producing at nearly a point-per-game pace while driving offense are among the NHL’s most valuable assets. With the salary cap continuing to rise, Robertson has every reason to pursue a contract that reflects his status among the league’s elite forwards.

A Short-Term Deal Could Still Be an Option

While many expect Dallas and Robertson to eventually agree on a long-term extension, arbitration could also lead to another interesting possibility.

As noted by The Dallas Morning News’ Lia Assimakopoulos, if negotiations don’t result in a long-term agreement, the two sides could ultimately settle on a one-year contract. That would position Robertson to become an unrestricted free agent next summer, giving him another opportunity to negotiate a massive payday.

That outcome likely isn’t Dallas’ preferred scenario.

The Stars have built one of the NHL’s strongest young cores around Robertson, Wyatt Johnston, Jake Oettinger, Thomas Harley, Roope Hintz, and Miro Heiskanen. Keeping Robertson as part of that group for the foreseeable future remains one of the organization’s top priorities.

Jim Nill Remains Confident

Despite the ongoing negotiations, the Stars have maintained confidence that a deal will eventually get done.

Speaking on the opening day of free agency, general manager Jim Nill downplayed concerns surrounding Robertson’s contract situation. “I think everybody needs to understand this is July 1,” Nill said. “The games don’t start until September, and this is… part of contract negotiations. The goal is to get him signed.”

Those comments suggest Dallas isn’t panicking despite the lack of a completed deal. Instead, the organization appears willing to continue working toward a long-term extension before arbitration ever becomes necessary.

The Focus Now Shifts Back to Dallas

Robertson has developed into one of the NHL’s premier offensive forwards since making his debut in 2020. Through 456 regular-season games, he has accumulated 490 points, including 213 goals and 277 assists, establishing himself as one of the league’s most consistent scoring threats.

Now, the attention shifts entirely back to negotiations.

If Friedman’s report proves accurate and Robertson officially files for arbitration, offer sheet speculation will come to an end. The bigger question will become whether Dallas can convince one of its franchise players to sign a long-term extension—or whether the two sides ultimately settle on a one-year deal that puts unrestricted free agency just one season away.

Either way, Robertson’s reported decision appears less about wanting to leave Dallas and more about ensuring he receives the contract his production has earned. The Stars still have time to reach an agreement, but with arbitration looming, the pressure is beginning to mount.
