Brenden Morrow, who played for the Tampa Bay Lightning at age 36 last year, may be set to announce his retirement from hockey, reports Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News. Morrow is planning on making an announcement Thursday through the Dallas Stars.
Morrow was looking for a new team over the summer, following the end of his contract with Tampa, but no work or tryout came for the veteran.
It makes sense that the announcement is coming now, after the trade deadline, when any last hopes of getting a deal this season would appear to have vanished. He didn’t wind up finding or taking a Scott Gomez-style AHL tryout or even a post-deadline deal to fill out the roster on a team that won’t compete this year.
Morrow will retire just nine games shy of the 1,000 game mark, having scored 265 goals and 310 assists. 835 of those 991 games came in a Dallas jersey, a team for which he put up two 30-goal seasons for the Stars.
