With Canada’s gold medal win at the 2016 IIHF World Championship, Corey Perry becomes the 27th member of the IIHF’s Triple Gold Club. The honor is given to players who have won an Olympic gold medal, a World Championship gold medal and the Stanley Cup.
Perry gets the Worlds gold on his third appearance in the annual tournament. His honor also includes the 2007 Stanley Cup and gold medals at both the Vancouver and Sochi Olympics.
Perry also has the rare honor Triple Gold combined with gold at the World Junior Championship and a Memorial Cup championship. He’s just the second player to ever accomplish the feat.
Perry entered the tournament as one of 11 Canadians who could enter the Triple Gold Club with a win at the World Championship, but the only one who went. The rest of that list reads: Dan Boyle, Jeff Carter, Drew Doughty, Ryan Getzlaf, Marc-Andre Fleury, Duncan Keith, Chris Kunitz, Mike Richards, Brent Seabrook and Patrick Sharp.
The last player to enter the club before Perry was Sidney Crosby, who entered with a World Championship gold medal at the 2015 tournament.
The Canadian win also brings Brad Marchand within one prize of the Triple Gold Club himself. If he were to be on the next Canadian Olympic team and win gold, he’d join the club as well.
