The second half of the Sarnia Sting’s highly projected forwards for the upcoming draft, Beckham Edwards, has slipped slightly after having big hopes at the start of the season. Coming off his rookie season in the OHL, where he scored 25 goals and 45 points for the Sting, Edwards looked to improve in his sophomore season. Before his second season, Edwards also played for Canada at the Hlinka-Gretzky Cup, along with several other Canadians in this upcoming draft, and he recorded four points in five games. Things were trending in the right direction for him.
This past season, Edwards wasn’t able to improve on his rookie totals. In fact, he once again recorded 45 points, with his goal scoring taking a dip as he scored less than 20. Sarnia wasn’t a good team this past season, as they will be picking fourth in the upcoming OHL Priority Selection, so Edwards does have a bit of an excuse for why he wasn’t able to produce as much as he was projected to.
Edwards’ greatest attribute is his shot. He has a pro-hockey release already at only 18 years old. With the ability to get the puck off his stick in a matter of seconds, Edwards can fool goaltenders easily and pick the top corner with pinpoint accuracy. He also has very good hockey sense and awareness. He always seems to be in the right place when his team has the puck. Whether he is open in the defensive zone for a breakout pass or quietly sneaking behind defenders in the neutral zone for an offensive break, his hockey smarts are a key part of his game.

Where he will need to improve next season is his overall output. He has a lot of offensive upside, but hasn’t been able to show all of it in his first two seasons in Sarnia. The Sting should be looking to take a step next season, and he has to be a big reason why they get out of the basement and hopefully back into the playoffs. If he can get into the 50-60 point range, that will be a big improvement for him. Next season is projected to be his final season in the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) as he is projected to play at Notre Dame in 2027-28.

Beckham Edwards – NHL Draft Projection
With a centre class as middling as this one, Edwards’ services will be needed by NHL teams. There is a lot of potential with a player like this, and he has tons of time to improve his game before he makes the move to pro hockey. I see Edwards being taken in the middle of the second round through the middle of the third— a risky pick, but one that I think will pay off for NHL teams.
Quotables
“He was known as a highly touted goal scorer during his minor hockey career, but it didn’t come as easily this year as Sarnia struggled as a whole. I like how physically strong he is, and he’s good as a support player. I just wish he found another level to his game.” – Steven Ellis, Daily Faceoff
“Edwards is strong on pucks and can drive to the net in control; he looks heavier than his current listing. He has good dexterity catching and handling bad passes into his pocket. He has some power to his game. And he also knows how to go to the inside and use the space he has left behind to involve his linemates, which has added layers to his game offensively as it comes along.” Scott Wheeler, The Athletic (from 2026 NHL Draft ranking: Gavin McKenna, Ivar Stenberg top Wheeler’s March top 64 list)

NHL Potential
There is an NHL player inside of what Edwards brings. Maybe not in the top six, but he can be a complementary third-line centre that can score goals and be smart in all facets of the game.
