Budweiser Orchestrates Flash Crowd During Ontario Beer League Game

Two rec. league hockey teams from Ontario, the Amigos and the Generals, were stunned as a flash hockey crowd formed in their local arena, filmed by Budweiser Canada as part of a “Big Game” commercial to be televised during the NFL Superbowl on Sunday. The crowd entered the near empty arena and filled the stands in the middle of play, giving the bemused players a taste of what it would be like to play in the big leagues.

As part of the intro to the ad, Budweiser Canada writes;

“We told two Port Credit, Ontario teams we were shooting a documentary about rec league hockey. We lied.

The flash mob idea was named “Project X” and arranged via a yahoo community group where participants were offered a $150.00 fee to take part. In an unexpected twist, the game ended tied 3-3 after 60 minutes, with the Generals scoring the winning goal in overtime to take a 4-3 victory. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity was created by Budweiser for these players and they will always have the video as evidence to prove it really did happen.
