Capitals’ Cole Hutson and Andrew Cristall Invited to 2026 NHLPA Rookie Showcase

Two members of the Washington Capitals organization have been invited to the 2026 NHLPA Rookie Showcase in Chicago, Illinois, next week. Defenseman Cole Hutson and forward Andrew Cristall are expected to travel to the Blackhawks Ice Center Presented by Fifth Third Bank to represent the Screaming Eagle as two of more than 20 invitees to this year’s event. 

Hutson & Cristall Represent the Future in Washington

Hutson, 20, injected life into the Capitals blueline in a late playoff push last season by recording 10 points in 14 NHL games after arriving from Boston College. He was selected in the second round (43rd overall) of the 2024 NHL Draft before becoming one of the fastest-rising prospects last season. The left-handed defender left a very good impression in his first 10+ games in the NHL. 

Cristall, 21, is still waiting for his first crack at life in the NHL after being taken in the second round (40th overall) of the 2023 NHL Draft. He spent last season with the Hershey Bears in the AHL, scoring 20 goals and amassing 60 points in 72 games. Cristall produced a point-per-game pace in his first professional postseason run, totaling seven points in six games. 

The yearly rookie showcase is a small indication of which players the NHL and/or NHLPA feel would be the most marketable prospects over the next few seasons of NHL action. Ryan Leonard enjoyed a skate on his home practice surface at last season’s Showcase. Ivan Miroshnichenko was the sole representative for Washington at the 14th annual Showcase in September 2024. 

Capitals Tied at the Top With 2 Selections

Washington’s two invitations are tied with four other NHL clubs for the most selections at this year’s Showcase. The other Eastern Conference clubs with multiple selections are the Detroit Red Wings (Trey Augustine & Carter Bear) and the New York Islanders (Kashawn Aitcheson & Cole Eiserman). The Western Conference sends duos from the San Jose Sharks (Filip Bystedt & Quentin Musty) and the hometown Chicago Blackhawks (Sacha Boisvert & Roman Kanterov). 

Teams sending solo representatives include the Toronto Maple Leafs (Gavin McKenna), the Philadelphia Flyers (Porter Martone), the St. Louis Blues (Justin Carbonneau), the Vegas Golden Knights (Trevor Connelly), the New York Rangers (Liam Greentree) the Boston Bruins (James Hagens), the Colorado Avalanche (TJ Hughes), the Anaheim Ducks (Roger McQueen), the Tampa Bay Lightning (Sam O’Reilly), and the Pittsburgh Penguins (Bill Zonnon). The defending Stanley Cup Champion Carolina Hurricanes, will also be represented (Charlie Cerrato).

This year’s class is noticeably shorter than in years past, when nearly every team was represented by an athlete with 30+ selections at prior Rookie Showcases. 

Rookie Showcase Moved From Arlington 

The 2026 NHLPA Rookie Showcase finds a new home this season after spending the last four years at the MedStar Capitals IcePlex in Arlington, Virginia from 2022-2025. The first-year player meetup was primarily hosted in Toronto, Canada prior to its mini-residency in Washington, D.C. over the last few years. 

The annual event was moved up in the NHL schedule from its normal spot before training camp to the end of July when the NHLPA partners like Upper Deck, Electronic Arts, Fanatics and CIBC will be convening for the 46th National Sports Collectors Convention at Donald E. Stephens Convention Center the Rosemont, Illinois between July 29 and Aug. 2. The change allows the NHL and NHLPA to have a bigger presence with potential player appearances at the major convention event while showcasing to the players how their name, image and likeness can help them connect with fans and collectors away from the rink. 

With the reemergence of the sports card and collectibles industries, these lessons from the NHL and the NHLPA are becoming more important in teaching young up-and-coming athletes how to best navigate this new life they are skating into over the next couple of seasons.
