Blackhawks Signing Patrick Kane is a “Love Letter” From the Organization

What we thought was the impossible happened as Patrick Kane signed a two-year, $16 million contract ($8 million per season)  on July 23 with the Chicago Blackhawks. Kane, after a long three and a half seasons, is coming back home to the Windy City. Kane was, and still is, a fan-favorite and was the main catalyst for the three Stanley Cups won last decade, and is the greatest American-born hockey player of all time. 

Back in 2022, general manager (GM) Kyle Davidson said that the door for a return was closed, and now, in 2026, Chicago got its legend back. However, there’s obviously been a change of heart since then. This signing has given the organization a much-needed spark for both fans and players, and it can be considered as Davidson and Danny Wirtz’s “love letter” to everyone. 

For the Fans 

Sure, financially for the Blackhawks, this was the correct move to make. The city is going to be rushing to get new 88 sweaters, including the new black alternate that will be sported as a third jersey option this upcoming season; the United Center in October will be filled with them (including 98’s). Everything Kane-related will be flying off the shelves. Fans don’t care about the analytics or how much he was paid (the Blackhawks can easily afford it, especially for only two years); they got their favorite player back. 

There’s more to it, though. The Blackhawks haven’t won a playoff series since they beat the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2015 to win the Stanley Cup (Kane had the Cup-clinching goal); that’s 11 years. They also haven’t made the playoffs in six years. The Blackhawks have picked in the top-10 every year since 2022, and from 2023 to this year’s Draft, they’ve picked first to fourth, in that order. Chicago hasn’t finished higher than 30th in the league in those four years, as well. 

Still, the fans packed the United Center for all 41 home games and were loud every night. They still watched from home and supported their guys, because that’s what Blackhawks fans do. Blackhawks fans are some of the most loyal people in the NHL, and they more than deserve this and have something to be excited about. Yes, the franchise saw three Cups in one decade, but the last 11 years — the last four years — have been long, and it was time the organization gave them some sort of a  ‘thank you.’ 

For the Kids on the Blackhawks 

This is as much for young guns as it is for the fans. Kane, while being 37 years old, hasn’t really slowed down. He isn’t too enthusiastically encouraged to backcheck to get back on defense anymore at this point in his career, but offensively, he’s still a weapon. Kane is just as smart on the ice as he was ten years ago and can work around defenders and score goals just as easily. Kane, last season with the Detroit Red Wings, had 57 points (16 goals and 41 assists) in 67 games, helping former Blackhawk and current Red Wing Alex DeBrincat to 41 goals in the last campaign. 

The fact Kane helped DeBrincat to 41 goals should be very exciting for Connor Bedard, Anton Frondell, Nick Lardis, and Frank Nazar. If and when Kane finds himself out on the ice with one of those four, he’s going to find them and feed them a goal. Lardis always looked up to Kane, and for Frondell and Nazar, who are still trying to find their way in the NHL, while Nazar is trying to live up to a large seven-year deal, having Kane there is going to be such a huge confidence boost. Just his 19 seasons of wisdom alone. 

Bedard has to be elated right now. This is the best linemate he’s had in his career, and in November, he should be much more confident jumping into the fire again after getting surgery on his left shoulder, just because he has Kane’s presence to the right of him. Plus, he just signed a $75 million contract to stay in Chicago for five years, which is where he truly wants to be. Davidson paid him and is finally giving him someone to pair with, and as a  GM, that’s the least you can do for your franchise superstar, but it’s also a thank you for seeing our vision and riding with us. 

For Kane, he’s coming back to his home: Chicago. The fans are getting their all-time player back. The young stars are getting a mentor. All the organization had to do was open that door, and this is the most exciting Blackhawks hockey has been in a long time.
