Marner’s Agent Details Rift with Maple Leafs

Just when it appeared the story was finally over, new comments from Mitch Marner’s agent, Darren Ferris, are offering insight into why things ultimately unraveled between the star winger and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Speaking on a recent podcast, Ferris suggested the issues dated back to Marner’s entry-level contract.

According to Ferris, Marner was not given the same bonus structure as Auston Matthews, which set the tone early. He also claimed that Marner was never fully supported by the organization and became the scapegoat for the team’s playoff struggles over the years.

Ferris added that there has been significant misinformation surrounding Marner’s contract negotiations and departure.

Ferris explained:

“Here’s really what people don’t know. Through that year, Brad Treliving and I sat down a couple of times and discussed Mitch’s situation. I tabled a lot of concerns and said we’d wait and see how the year played out before entering into any contract discussions. And I think that Carolina event of what happened, I don’t think helped the situation, and I think there was no real effort by the organization to rectify any of the concerns.”

He added:

“At one point I even positioned, and that was early in the year, that Brad maybe look at opportunities for a trade if he wasn’t comfortable in waiting, and if they wanted to trade Mitch, he would consider going to the Western Conference. It wasn’t just Vegas at that time. Honestly, I felt they always wanted to trade him regardless. I think just the whole Carolina episode was the catalyst here. It was perceived differently in the media.”

Senators Saw Tkachuk Exit Coming

Ottawa Senators GM Steve Staios revealed that Brady Tkachuk’s eventual departure didn’t come as a complete surprise internally. During a recent interview, Staios explained that the organization had noticed signs for over a year that Tkachuk might not remain long-term.

Despite efforts to create a strong team environment and keep the core intact, some factors were beyond the team’s control. Once they had conversations with Tkachuk, it became clear that exploring a trade was the best course of action. He noted that as soon as they realized the Tkachuk situation was a problem, they had to act. “One is it could become a distraction to the team and two is the return on value isn’t quite there. So we were prudent; we engaged in the process, went through that diligently, and worked towards a solution.”
