Hurricanes Activate Seth Jarvis From Injured Reserve

In June, the Carolina Hurricanes announced that forward Seth Jarvis had surgery on his right shoulder, with a recovery time of four to six months. The timeline for a return was between late October and December. Before the team left for their five-game road trip during the North Carolina State Fair, there were mentions of the Winnipeg native joining them. There was a sense he could return sooner rather than later, especially with the recent injuries to Jordan Staal, Taylor Hall, and Mark Jankowski.

During Wednesday’s practice in Edmonton, Jarvis was fully participating on the third line with Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Jordan Martinook. He also took reps with the second power play unit, which included Kotkaniemi, Logan Stankoven, K’Andre Miller, and Juuso Välimäki. Then at 5:45 p.m. Eastern, the Hurricanes announced Jarvis will be activated from injured reserve (IR). What does it mean for both sides?

Jarvis’ Return Is a Huge Boost for the Hurricanes

While it is good news that Jarvis is activated from IR, Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour didn’t fully say whether he will play Thursday night against the Edmonton Oilers. “It’s getting closer. We’re trying to get him every [rep], like power-play time and stuff that he hasn’t really been doing, in hopes that we get told he’s good to go.”

Jarvis also commented after practice that he isn’t nervous about returning. He’s just ready to get back on the ice after missing the last 11 games. “I know how much work I put into my shoulder and, in general, getting ready to play… Now that I’m close, I just couldn’t be more excited.”

Whether he plays against the Oilers on Thursday night or the St. Louis Blues on Saturday, Oct. 24, it’ll be a huge boost to have the back-to-back-to-back 30-goal scorer back. He’s been pivotal for the Hurricanes since breaking onto the roster in 2021-22. It’ll be interesting whether he slots on the top line the first game he’s back, or sticks with the third line as everyone saw at practice. Either way, it’s good to see Jarvis off the IR and playing again.

In other news, Bradly Nadeau was reassigned back to the Chicago Wolves after tallying two assists in three games. In the four games he’s played for the Wolves this season, he had one goal. Along with the Nadeau and Jarvis news, Skyler Brind’Amour got recalled from the American Hockey League (AHL). In six games this season, he has two goals and three points. He leads the team in goals and is tied for the team lead in points.

It’ll be interesting to see whether the Hurricanes dress Jarvis on Thursday night. If they do, we could see the lines from Wednesday’s practice. If not, recalling Brind’Amour gives the team another option at center. However it plays out, Jarvis is back.
