Get to Know the Newest Washington Capital: Cole Hutson

Cole Hutson is headed to the Beltway after agreeing to his three-year entry-level contract (ELC) with the Washington Capitals on March 15. The 5-foot-10 defenseman arrives in Washington, D.C. after two promising seasons at Boston University (BU), where he recorded 80 points in 74 games. Capitals fans have eagerly awaited a chance to watch Hutson skate in the red, white, and blue since watching flashes of his potential during the preseason over the last two years.

Hutson will be a raw product for the next few seasons, but he instantly adds another dynamic, play-making element to the Capitals’ defensive group. Before he hits pro ice for the first time, let’s take a trip through the years to learn how the Hutson got to Washington.

Hutson Started with the United States National Development Team Program

The Capitals’ newest defenseman started as an underager in the United States National Team Development Program (USNTDP) as a 16-year-old during the 2022-23 season. Hutson showcased his high-level offensive skills at the Under-17 (U17) level, registering 42 points in 42 games, a stat line that earned him a promotion to the U18 team. Despite being several years younger than most of the competition, the teenager recorded 26 points in 19 games.

Hutson has excelled in international competition with the USNTDP at every given opportunity. His nine points were the best among defensemen at the 2022 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. He also helped the United States win a gold medal at the 2023 Under-18 World Junior Championships, where he recorded the most assists (11) and points (12) among defensemen.

The Illinois product repeated his success the following season with 51 points in 51 games for the U.S. National U18 Team during the 2023-24 campaign. The good times continued at the 2024 World Juniors, where he was named the best defenseman in the tournament after posting the most goals (four), assists (9), and points (13) in a second-place finish for the Americans. He would repeat that performance as a top blueliner at the 2025 World Juniors, with the most assists (eight) and points (11) as the United States reclaimed the gold medal.

Hutson was selected by the Capitals with the 43rd-overall pick in the second round of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft. He instantly added some much-needed defensive firepower to a Washington prospect pool loaded with forward prospects such as Andrew Cristall, Ilya Protas, and Lynden Lakovic. Hutson has jumped to the top of the Capitals’ defensive prospects ahead of Ryan Chesley and Cam Allen. Washington doubled down on defense by selecting Leon Muggli nine picks later with the 52nd-overall pick in that 2024 draft.

Shipping up to Boston For College

Following in his brother’s footsteps, Cole traveled north to BU for his college hockey experience. Quinn Hutson and Lane Hutson learned under head coach Jay Pandolfo with the Terriers during the 2022-23 season, and Cole took his turn as the Hutson on campus for the 2024-25 campaign.

Cole electrified BU fans with 48 points in 39 games during his freshman season to lead all defenseman in scoring, and he was awarded the Tim Taylor Award as the NCAA’s top collegiate rookie. BU’s 3-1 loss to Western Michigan in the 2025 National Championship game left them one game short of their ultimate goal.

The left hander returned to college this season with national title hopes, but the Terriers had a nightmare season by going 17-17-2. Hutson led the team in assists (22) and points (32), but it wasn’t enough to earn a spot in the 2026 Division I Men’s ice hockey tournament. This cleared the way for the highly-prized prospect to make the trip from Boston to Washington earlier than anticipated.

Hutson Signs Pro Deal

The 19-year-old inked his ELC with Washington to start his pro career earlier this week. Hutson’s contract is a $2.82-million deal that runs through the 2027-28 season before he becomes a restricted free agent. His contract will carry a $941,000 cap hit over the next three seasons. He will need to play more than nine games at the NHL level before the first year of his contract kicks in, so how the Capitals choose to manage the final 14 games of the regular season should be interesting.

Hutson brings unique offensive skills that will likely force head coach Spencer Carbery to find a spot in his lineup for him. Hutson practiced with Washington at the MedStar Ice Complex for the first time on Tuesday morning. The first opportunity for him to take his rookie lap will be against the Ottawa Senators at Capital One Arena at 7:30 pm tomorrow night (March 18).
