Hurricanes’ Stanley Cup Parade Showcases Why Raleigh Is a Hockey City

Years from now, when someone asks a Carolina Hurricanes fan about June 20, 2026, they will go back to a day full of core memories. From Jordan Martinook leading a Storm Surge and screaming “Mistaaaa Svechnikoooov” to guys ripping off Rod Brind’Amour‘s shirt to multitudes of gratitude from the players to the fans, the 2026 Stanley Cup Parade will live on forever. Heading into Saturday, there were estimates of the crowds nearing 100,000 people. In the end, that number was surpassed and smashed by a good margin. It also solidified one thing: Raleigh, North Carolina, is a hockey city.

Raleigh Is a Hockey City

While city officials guessed that crowds could reach at least 100,000, it turned out that it was bigger than that. Hours after the parade and rally concluded near City Center in downtown Raleigh, it was concluded that the crowds reached 150,000 Canaics to celebrate the 2026 Stanley Cup Champions.

The crowds were so big that they surprised a ton of people on the Hurricanes staff, players, and everyone else involved with the organization. It was known that it was going to be a party, but the size was more than anyone thought it could be, and it was felt by the players. During the rally portion of the festivities, and even during the media availability between the rally and parade, gratitude was given to the fans. They did not just come out; they showcased why Raleigh is a hockey city.

When asked about the crowd turnout and electric atmosphere, Sebastian Aho stated, “Well, to be quite honest, I did not (expect this). I mean, Jordo [Jordan Staal] was saying how awesome it was going to be. I knew it was going to be awesome, but like this, something else. I guess it’s my bad not taking his word because he’s always right. Always listen to el jefe, Jordan Staal.”

The 35th overall pick in 2015 was blown away by the turnout, along with other players on the Hurricanes roster. It’s no surprise that Caniacs come out to celebrate their team, but Saturday was a whole other level.

Rewinding to 2006, the Hurricanes celebrated in the parking lot of what was then RBC Center. Fast-forward to 2026, and there were over 150,000 fans packing downtown Raleigh. For someone who was there for both parades, Brind’Amour saw how much support has grown for this team in the last 20 years.

When asked about the turnout, he stated, “So rewarding. This is one thing about social media, that I know I’m not a fan of, but that’s all I’ve been doing for three days, is watching social media and watching my boy go around and celebrate. I love that we can have those memories forever. That’s what’s supposed to happen. Then, to see this, I’m going to need some time to bring all of this in because this is icing on the cake right here. To see how happy people were for us, we really did a great thing here. I’m really proud of it.”

When people say that the Lenovo Center is the loudest house in the NHL, it’s not hyperbole. It is a well-known fact. They’ve sold out every game for the last three seasons and are recognized by opposing teams as one of the hardest places to win in. Throughout the playoffs, the levels go up a few notches. During the 2026 Stanley Cup Final, the hockey world got a true taste of what the Caniacs and “The Lenny” are all about.

Over the next few years, people will talk about the 2026 Stanley Cup Parade. It was not just showing out in support of the Hurricanes; it was also showcasing why Raleigh is a hockey city. Saturday, June 20, will always be remembered for how the Caniacs put the hockey world on notice that Raleigh, North Carolina, is not some small southern market but a city that lives and breathes Hurricanes hockey.

While people are divided over their college teams in the Triangle between UNC, Duke, and NC State, the one thing that bonds everyone together is the Hurricanes. Make no mistake about it, Raleigh will forever and always be a hockey city.
