Hurricanes’ Unger Sörum Poised for Another Impactful Season

The Carolina Hurricanes are one of those teams that know how to develop their prospects; no matter when or where they were selected in the draft, they improve each year. That is true of Swedish-Norwegian forward Felix Unger Sörum.

After his first season on North American ice in 2024-25, his second season with the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League (AHL) in 2025-26 was a career year. Now that he will be entering his third pro season, expect another jump in the right-winger’s development.

Unger Sörum Carrying Momentum from Last Season

Unger Sörum scored five goals and 20 points in 61 AHL games with the Wolves in his first pro season in North America. After playing in 35 Swedish Hockey League (SHL) games in his last year with Leksands IF, it made sense for him to learn the physicality, speed and different style of the game in his first year in the AHL.

That said, 2025-26 was Sörum’s breakout season. He scored 17 goals and 66 points in 71 games, and followed that up with five goals and 12 points in 14 Calder Cup Playoff games en route to a Calder Cup Final appearance. He led the Wolves in assists (49) and points, while ranking third on the team in goals behind Bradly Nadeau, with 27, and Justin Robidas with 23.

That is a pretty impressive jump, going from 20 points to 66 in just two seasons in North America. In addition to playing 71 games for the Wolves, he made his NHL debut with the Hurricanes, tallying one assist against the New York Islanders on April 14. In that game, he played 17 shifts, earned 14:35 of ice time and finished with a plus/minus of plus-1.

Unger Sörum is entering the second season of his three-year, $2.61 million entry-level contract (ELC), which he signed in July 2023. His annual average value (AAV) in the AHL is $82,500, while his NHL salary is $903,334. His deal also contains a $20,000 performance bonus.

Heading into this season, everyone will be focused on the Hurricanes’ prospects to watch, namely Nadeau, Joel Nystrom, and Charlie Cerrato. However, do not overlook Unger Sörum, Charles Alexis Legault, Robidas, and others, who could have huge seasons for the Wolves as the defending Western Conference Champions looking to win it all.

Under head coach Sprios Anastas last season, Unger Sörum took off. Now with a full season of Anastas at the helm, plus with most of the roster returning for 2026-27, the Wolves are poised for a return to the Calder Cup Final, and they will rely on Nadeau, Robidas, Nystrom, and Unger Sörum to lead the way.

If Unger Sörum can carry his upward trajectory into the 2026-27 season, he could reach 70 points. There is also a chance that Nadeau begins the season in Carolina while Seth Jarvis recovers from shoulder surgery, and Unger Sörum could be the main force in Chicago.

It’ll be interesting to see how the season goes as Unger Sörum enters his third season in North America. But if the trend of putting up points continues, he could make his case to get a longer look with the NHL team. If not this season, he should get a long look in 2027-28, when some roster spots open up as contracts expire. Either way, 2026-27 could be a huge season for the 20-year-old right winger.
