Long time Red Wing, and member of “The Grind Line”, Kirk Maltby is set to announce his retirement today at a pregame (5:30 p.m.) press conference at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.
After spending 14 seasons with the Red Wings, winning 4 Stanley Cups, the 37 year old winger signed a two-way contract this off season. When he did not make the team out of training camp the veteran faced being sent to the American Hockey League to play with the Red Wings’ affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins.
Rumors are circulating via Twitter that Maltby will be joining the Red Wings’ front office staff filling the spot left vacant when Pat Verbeek relocated to the Tampa Bay Lightning with Steve Yzerman.
