John Chayka continues to shake up the Toronto Maple Leafs roster, making a trade on Thursday to acquire forward Aatu Räty from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for two former NCAA signings in Jacob Quillan and Brandon Buhr.
Räty just cleared waivers with the Canucks earlier on Thursday after he was waived on October 14.
Just 23 years old, Räty has 118 games of regular season NHL experience with the New York Islanders and Canucks over parts of five seasons. In four games this season with the Canucks, he has one goal and a minus-two rating while averaging just over 10 minutes of ice time.
He’s coming off a season in which he recorded four goals and 14 points in 66 regular season games – averaging 0.25 points per game over his career thus far.

While some might argue that Quillan didn’t get a good enough opportunity with the Maple Leafs, he did have 14 goals and 36 points in 40 games with the AHL Toronto Marlies last season, adding another three points in 23 games with the Maple Leafs.
So far this season, Quillan has no points in four games with the Marlies.
The 24-year-old Buhr, on the other hand, has two assists in four games this season for the Marlies. It’s his first AHL season since signing with the organization as a collegiate free agent out of Union College.
The trade brings a little more NHL experience to the Maple Leafs, while the Canucks can use Quillan and Buhr to continue their roster overhaul this season.
