In today’s NHL rumors rundown, the Vancouver Canucks are closing in on major front office decisions that could include a bigger role for two franchise icons. Meanwhile, the Toronto Maple Leafs are evaluating their future with both their head coach and star center. Finally, are the Edmonton Oilers already running out of runway when it comes to Connor McDavid?
Canucks Near Front Office Clarity, Sedins Could Take Larger Roles
According to Elliotte Friedman, the Vancouver Canucks are expected to finalize key decisions regarding their hockey operations structure in the coming days. On the latest 32 Thoughts podcast, he suggested Monday could be a big day internally, with much of the focus on who will take over as the club’s head of hockey operations. So too, there is growing buzz around expanded roles for Daniel and Henrik Sedin.

The organization has reportedly approached the Sedins about increasing their involvement, and the twins are said to be weighing that opportunity. Inspired in part by how the Toronto Maple Leafs structured their leadership group (including Mats Sundin)—adding experienced voices in advisory roles—Vancouver could follow a similar model.
Sundin had to relocate his family, but the Sedins are already embedded within the organization and city, making a transition easier if they choose to accept. Their influence could play a significant role in shaping the Canucks’ future.
Maple Leafs Expect Berube Back, Matthews’ Long-Term Outlook Looms
In Toronto, the expectation is that head coach Craig Berube will return behind the bench next season. TSN’s Darren Dreger reports that a recent meeting between Berube and general manager John Chayka served as a full organizational audit, breaking down the roster and identifying areas for improvement.
However, the bigger storyline continues to revolve around Auston Matthews and his long-term future with the team. While all signs point to Matthews being present at training camp, there are lingering questions about his commitment beyond his current deal.
Management (Chayka and Sundin) is expected to outline their vision for the team moving forward in upcoming discussions with Matthews. While it’s unlikely he makes any immediate commitment, the Maple Leafs are operating under the belief that Matthews remains committed—but the situation is one to watch closely.
Oilers Facing McDavid Crossroads Amid Organizational Pressure
The Edmonton Oilers are entering a pivotal offseason, with Connor McDavid’s future casting a long shadow over every decision. While some believe the superstar will ultimately sign an extension, the organization cannot afford to assume anything.
Allan Mitchell of The Athletic writes:
“McDavid’s two-year contract sets up an inevitable pressure point. When is the best time to trade him? Never, but the team may be just over one year away from considering the options. McDavid holds the cards, should he choose to play out his contract.”

If there is any indication that McDavid is unwilling to commit long-term, the Oilers may be forced to explore a trade rather than risk losing him for nothing. Such a move would change everything, but Mitchell argues that ownership understands McDavid’s value and can’t squander an opportunity to make the most of it.
Mitchell then wonders if McDavid trusts the current management team to right the ship. General manager Stan Bowman and CEO Jeff Jackson have both faced criticism for roster decisions and asset management. There are questions about whether ownership fully trusts them to handle a critical offseason, or whatever happens with McDavid under contract if another year is wasted.
If the Oilers can prove they are legitimate contenders, it strengthens their case to keep McDavid. If not, the clock will continue to tick toward a massive decision.
