Red Wings’ Best-Case Scenarios for 2026-27 Season

As the Detroit Red Wings are currently in the midst of one of the most important offseasons in quite a few years, the 2026-27 season could be just as important. While there are still plenty of question marks about what the roster will look like come opening night, there are a handful of things that will need to go the organization’s way for it to be a successful season.

Bounce Back Season For Kasper

After a strong rookie campaign in the 2024-25 season, putting up 37 points (19 goals, 18 assists), the sophomore season for Marco Kasper was a bit of a letdown. Many expected he would hit the sophomore slump, but he seemed snakebitten for the majority of last season and put up just over half the points he did in 2024-25 (19 points). With the likely need for a player to step up at the center position, Kasper could very easily be that player.

If Kasper can find the game he played and produce as he did in his rookie season, he should be able to fill a hole that will likely be left by the outgoing Dylan Larkin (if a trade happens before opening night). The game that he plays, with plenty of energy and willingness to get to the dirty areas, on top of being able to produce, could elevate him to the top center spot and be a much-welcomed sign for a Red Wings team that needs it badly.

Impact From Youngsters

As the organization finds itself in the midst of an important stretch, there are a handful of prospects who are entering that same stage in their development as well. Included in that are the likes of Michael Brandsegg-Nygård and Nate Danielson. After making the opening night roster last season, Brandsegg-Nygård ended up spending the majority of the season with the Red Wings’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins. With the Griffins, he showed exactly why people are excited about his future, playing a strong two-way game from the wing spot and putting up solid numbers (44 points in 66 games played).

Along with Brandsegg-Nygård is Danielson. After being drafted in the first round of the 2023 Draft, Danielson has yet to make a full-time impact at the NHL level. Between injuries and not being able to make a true impact when he has been in the Red Wings’ lineup (seven points in 28 games last season), the upcoming training camp and preseason will be a big one for the center. As mentioned earlier, the Red Wings will have at least one hole in the lineup spot come the beginning of the season, and if Danielson can take the next step in his game, he could easily add some needed depth to the lineup.

If the Red Wings can get solid play and production from Brandsegg-Nygård and Danielson, and maybe even get a prospect like Carter Bear or Carter Mazur to push for a middle-six spot in the lineup, the infusion of youth into a veteran-laden lineup would give them the energy boost and new blood to change their fortunes this upcoming season.

Season of Consistency and Health in Net

Last season, when John Gibson was healthy, he was one of the NHL’s best goaltenders. His play went hand in hand with the Red Wings’ success, and as the season progressed in the second half, his play did taper off a bit, and it seemed as if he was burned out. After spending a few seasons battling injuries with the Anaheim Ducks before being traded to the Red Wings at the 2025 Draft, it was a welcome sign to see him manage to stay healthy for the majority of the 2025-26 season. If the 33-year-old netminder can replicate his play from the middle part of last season, it would give the rest of the team another big-time boost.

With Cam Talbot not returning to the Red Wings (he is currently still an unrestricted free agent), the organization went out and signed Daniil Tarasov to be Gibson’s presumed backup for the 2026-27 season. After playing a career-high in games last season with the Florida Panthers, Tarasov will likely be battling it out for that backup spot with upstart goaltender prospect Michael Postava. Whoever wins the backup spot will need to take on that role, and if for some reason Gibson is unable to stay healthy, be relied upon to carry the workload in the crease.

The best-case scenario for the overall goaltending play this upcoming season is for Gibson to stay healthy and consistent, with either Postava or Tarasov taking on a role that helps give Gibson a rest when needed. If the Red Wings can have this happen, it will put them in a great spot throughout the season, especially with an offense that struggled to score in five-on-five play last season.

Still Reasons for Optimism in Detroit

While the offseason has been filled with turmoil and unexpected changes, there is still reason to believe that things can get on track and the Red Wings could finally end their playoff drought. With a roster including Alex DeBrincat, Lucas Raymond, and Moritz Seider, they already have the organizational pieces in place, and with the integration of more youth and solid goaltending, there’s still room for optimism in Detroit for the 2026-27 season.
