Sabres Weekly: Ruff Signs Extension & Much More

Here is the latest news and updates around the Buffalo Sabres for the week of May 25 – May 31, 2026.

Lindy Ruffs Signs Two-Year Extension

After a spectacular 2025-26 season, the Sabres decided to bring back head coach Lindy Ruff as they signed him to a two-year contract extension that runs through the 2027-28 season.

Since Ruff took over as head coach for his second stint with the organization, the Sabres have a record of 86-62-15, including an Atlantic Division title, a 50-win season and came one goal away from the Eastern Conference Final.

Alex Tuch Contract Talks

Entering the offseason, the Sabres have a big decision to make with Alex Tuch, deciding whether to re-sign him or let him hit free agency to see what’s out there for him.

Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet provided the latest update regarding where the Sabres and Tuch stand in contract negotiations. “I still heard Tuch and the Sabres were apart,” Friedman said. “Now, I don’t know if they talked at all during the playoffs and, who knows, maybe we drop the pod on Friday morning and they announce he’s signing, but I just heard before the playoffs that they were still apart.”

Tuch (30) recorded seven points in 13 playoff games this season, all seven coming in six games in Round 1 against the Boston Bruins. He also recorded 66 points in 79 regular-season games. We’ll see how long it takes for both sides to come to an agreement, if they even do.

Sabres Have Big Offseason Ahead

After the season the team just had, the organization has several contract decisions to make. Forwards Zach Benson and Peyton Krebs, along with defenseman Michael Kesselring, are pending restricted free agents. After the postseason Benson just had, he could be looking at a hefty deal coming his way. The team also has a few pending unrestricted free agents, including Beck Malenstyn, Tuch, Logan Stanley, and Luke Schenn.

Another notable name to watch is defenseman Bowen Byram, who becomes eligible for a contract extension on July 1.
