THW 2020 Mock NHL Draft Rounds 3-7: Our Armchair GMs Make Their Picks

This all started with The Hockey Writers’ writers coming together to mock draft Round 1 of the 2020 NHL Draft.

For writers and readers, it wasn’t enough.

We decided to do a Round 2 as well.

Once again, it wasn’t enough.

So, we decided to do a full-blown, seven-round mock draft. Rounds 1 and 2 include comments from the writers that drafted that player and my take on their selections. For Rounds 3-7, we just have them in a list as you’ll see below, followed by a team-by-team recap of the entire mock draft. But, if you have any questions about a certain pick, drop a comment at the bottom of the page and we’ll answer it.

The Hockey Writers 2020 NHL Entry Draft Guide

Before we dive in, let’s remind ourselves about the one rule around THW’s annual mock draft: no trading picks.

Of course, in the middle of our drafting, the NHL decided to announce how the lottery process will be working this year, so this mock draft will very likely be in the wrong order. But, it was a ton of fun and it deserved to be published anyway. If nothing else, we hope that it will give you a few extra names to keep on your radar when your team is drafting in the later rounds.

Rounds 1 and 2 are already published, with about 14,000 total words explaining the selections. Before diving into Rounds 3 to 7, you might want to check them out first:

You’re all caught up? Great. Now, let’s find out where the rest of the players hear their names called:

Bell’s Thoughts on Rounds 3-7

I won’t go too in-depth in this, as we could be here for a while. But feel free to drop a question or comment below and I’ll do my best at answering. Here are a few of my main takeaways though:

First, let’s talk about the talent left on the board. The most notable ones for me are (in no particular order):

  • Devon Levi, G, Carleton Place Canadians (CCHL)
  • Elliot Ekmark, C, Linkoping J20 (SuperElit)
  • Parker Ford C, Providence College (NCAA)
  • Billy Constantinou, D, Soo Greyhounds (OHL)
  • Dmitri Sheshin, RW, Stalnye Lisy Magnitogorsk (MHL)
  • Josh Lawrence, C, Saint John Sea Dogs (QMJHL)
  • Alexei Tsyplakov, LW, SKA-1946 St. Petersburg (MHL)

There are likely a few others that could very well hear their name called at the NHL Draft. Every mock draft that goes for a full seven rounds will see some different names left off the board, but I think there’s a good chance that a few of these guys that I’ve mentioned won’t be among the names actually left off come draft day.

Now, there are quite a few players that I think went too low or too high. Let’s start with the too low. I’ll keep it to one per round:

  • Round 3: Luke Evangelista (82)
  • Round 4: Zayde Wisdom (103)
  • Round 5: Maxim Groshev (135)
  • Round 6: Ivan Didkovsky (186)
  • Round 7: Xavier Simoneau (195)

For each of these players, I wouldn’t be surprised to see each of them go at least one round higher than where they were taken. Other than Evangelista, I’d be happy to take these players about two rounds higher (I’d use a second-round pick on Evangelista, but not a first). Simoneau could very well be a mid-round pick after his impressive performance this year.

Zayde Wisdom Kingston Frontenacs

Now, let’s look at a few players that I think were taken too high. Again, I’ll keep it to one per round:

  • Round 3: Louis Crevier (72)
  • Round 4: Adam Wilsby (107)
  • Round 5: Cade McNelly (133)
  • Round 6: Talon Zakall (165)
  • Round 7: Michael Vorlicky (199)

In my honest opinion, other than Crevier, I think there’s a very good chance that most of these players go undrafted. These are players that I’d take at least one round later. Of course, everyone values different things and you never know – they could all go higher. This is just my personal opinion.

Finally, let’s talk about the teams. The rich get richer this year, with the Ottawa Senators, Los Angeles Kings, Detroit Red Wings, and Montreal Canadiens coming away like bandits. They already have some of the league’s best prospect pools (maybe not the Red Wings, but Alexis Lafrenière helps that) and add to them in a big way here. Of course, having the large number of draft picks as these teams do certainly helps.

Of the teams with a normal amount of picks, the Buffalo Sabres, New Jersey Devils, Edmonton Oilers, San Jose Sharks, St. Louis Blues, and Vegas Golden Knights come away looking good too. I’d be happy with their hauls with the picks they had. The Devils’ three first-round picks is a very large boost to their prospect pool.

For easy reference, here is every team’s draft class from THW’s full mock draft:
