The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed goalie Sergei Bobrovsky to a three-year contract with an average annual value of $7 million, per Elliotte Friedman.
Bobrovsky joined the Florida Panthers in 2019-20 and helped backstop the team to a pair of Stanley Cup championships and a third appearance in the Stanley Cup Final. He has become one of the best “big-game” goalies in the league during his time with the Panthers.
How Bobrovsky Did in 2025-26
It was a rough season for Bobrovsky and the Panthers. In 51 starts, he went 27-23-1, which might not seem that bad but is his lowest win total since he won 24 games during the 2022-23 season.
His .877 save percentage is far and away the worst of his career, and his 3.07 goals against average is second only to his first season in Florida (3.23) in terms of his worst. The Panthers were plagued by major injuries to Aleksander Barkov and Matthew Tkachuk, hampering them right from the beginning of the season.
What Bobrovsky Brings to the Table
It really depends on which Bobrovsky we’re talking about. During the last several years, he has been a good regular-season goalie but one of the most clutch netminders in the playoffs there is.

Being in a platoon situation could bring out the best in the soon-to-be-38-year-old goaltender. He isn’t an elite NHL starter anymore, but being kept fresh in a platoon could leave him ready to take over in the playoffs as he’s shown he can. This could be possible with Toronto, who still has Anthony Stolarz on the roster.
How Bobrovsky Fits With the Maple Leafs
Bobrovsky isn’t necessarily being brought in for his regular season acumen. He should be solid if he can start around 30-40 games but will be an excellent option for a playoff run. After playing so much hockey over a three-year span, it is entirely possible that he just ran out of gas.
A rejuvenated Bobrovsky can make any team dangerous. When the minutes matter most and you need a big save, there are few goalies in the NHL that have the type of pedigree that he can bring to the table.
